Afghanistan cricket team’s head coach Jonathan Trott was disappointed with the team’s performance in the field against New Zealand. Jonathan Trott stated that poor fielding performance cost them the match else they could have created history by defeating New Zealand.
New Zealand outplayed Afghanistan across all the 3 facets of the game and won their 4th match out of 4 in the marquee ODI WC 2023. New Zealand showed to the WC that they could perform well exceedingly well even in the absence of Kane Williamson who played only one match and is sidelined due to an injury.

Jonathan Trott was having interaction with the media post the match. Trott pointed out that the dropped catch of Devon Conway could have changed the complexion of the match. Trott was quite crestfallen after the dropped catches.
“I think if we had taken those and with the wicket of [Devon] Conway, we would have been in a much better position as well. Not only like they were, I think they were about 116 [110] for four at one stage. So, we would have been in an even better position had we held on to those catches. But it wasn’t to be and unfortunately, we have to go home regretting those tonight,” said Jonathan Trott.
Consistency is what’s needed- Jonathan Trott
Jonathan Trott emphasized on the fact that the side is lacking consistency and the team is not doing their basics right. Jonathan Trott pointed out that dropped catches hurt the team and if the catches were taken then the results would have been different.
“Well, I certainly feel that [consistency] is what’s needed. I think that’s the only thing really stopping this team is doing the basics really well and that’s consistency,” said Jonathan Trott.
“So, if we had taken our catches and put New Zealand under pressure like we should have, I think you’d be looking at, not saying it would have changed the results as a fact, but you would have been looking at a very different performance,” he added.
