Former India head coach Ravi Shastri feels Shubman Gill‘s omission from the T20 World Cup squad must’ve been a tough pill to swallow for the youngster, but added that the early setback will only motivate him to get better. Shubman Gill did not find a place in the 15-man squad announced on April 30. He, however, will travel with the squad as one of the four backup players for the event, kicking off on June 2.

Shubman Gill had a slow start to the IPL season when he was passed over by the BCCI selection committee, which was headed by former India pacer Ajit Agarkar. The Rajasthan Royals’ Yashasvi Jaiswal was chosen by the selectors to start in the squad instead. At Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium on Friday, Gill displayed his returning magic by hitting the game-winning century against CSK. Shubman Gill, who scored 104 off just 55 balls, put on a record opening stand with Sai Sudharsan, who smashed 103 off just 51 balls.

Shastri stated during his commentary that Shubman Gill could easily fit into any team in the world, but he was unable to find a spot for the T20 World Cup in India. Gill immediately demonstrated his intentions against CSK by square-driving and lofting Mitchell Santner for four and six, respectively, in the first over. Heaved Simarjeet Singh for a six to reach his fifty in just twenty-five balls. Then, after hitting a four-pass square leg off, he reached his hundred off fifty balls.

Shubman Gill Should Come Back Better-Ravi Shastri

The former head coach of the team talked about Gill during the conversation, saying that he should bounce back strong even if he is not chosen for the 2024 T20 World Cup. Gill may be hurt, but he will still stay because the Shubman Gill class is still growing. He may not be in the top 15, but his influence will be felt by the public soon.

“He (Gill) would be hurting. He should be hurting. He should look at it positively and try to get better. A player of his caliber would walk into any side, but such is the talent in India that he doesn’t get a place,” Shastri was heard saying on commentary when Gill was batting.

“His class will continue to grow. He might not be in the World Cup team, but he will take it in stride. That will help him become a better player. He’ll go from strength to strength,” The former India head coach added.
