Shubman Gill will be around for a long time- Ravi Shastri
Ravi Shastri heaped praise on India Test captain Shubman Gill after his record-breaking England tour. Shubman Gill was coming into the series against England as the new skipper of the Test side and with a new role at No.4 following the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
Questions were raised about the 25-year-old’s poor run of form outside India but he let his bat do the talking. Shubman Gill ended the England tour with 754 runs to his name from five Tests, hitting four hundreds, including a double ton. He went on to break several records, and went level with Don Bradman for the most hundreds by a visiting captain in England.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Shastri said that Shubman Gill will be around international cricket for a long time and the England tour will help him in the long run.
“He’ll be around for a long, long time because we’ve seen what kind of series he’s had here. I think he’s only 25 years of age, and as you know, with this exposure, he’ll get even better,” said Shastri.
Ravi Shastri further stated that Shubman Gill will be amongst the very best in the business and he has a regal touch about him. The former Indian coach said that the way Shubman Gill bats is very easy on the eye and the current India Test captain has the ability to play the long innings.
“He’s right up there, he will be up there. He’s composed, he’s very regal, he’s got that, you know, when you look at him, there’s something regal about him. The way he bats, he’s very easy on the eye, very fluent, and he has the ability to play the long innings,” said Shastri.
Shubman Gill’s rise to the captaincy came at a time when India’s Test titans Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma bid farewell to the format, leaving a towering void in India’s batting order. Tasked with leading a generational shift, the young skipper embraced the challenge head-on in England, executing the opening phase of the transition with striking authority.
India’s next challenge will be at the Asia Cup, which will be played in T20 format as teams prepare for the next year’s World Cup in the shortest format, scheduled to be played in India and Sri Lanka. With a brilliant series in England, Shubman Gill’s name is among the frontrunners for a return to the T20I squad.
Shubman Gill is now all set to play in the Duleep Trophy, where he will be the captain of the North Zone team. The 25-year-old is also in the mix to be a part of the Asia Cup squad.
