IND vs ENG: “Don’t Write Shubman Gill Off Or Say He Can’t Play”- Kevin Pietersen Defends Out Of Form Batter

The out-of-form Shubman Gill has been backed by former England batter Kevin Pietersen, despite his lackluster showing in the first Test match against England in Hyderabad. In the first Test match against England, Shubman Gill scored 23 and 0, coming off two consecutively bad Test series in the West Indies and South Africa. The shocking 28-run loss that India suffered to drop to 0-1 down in the five-match series has focused further attention on Shubman Gill.

Gill has performed poorly in the red-ball format, averaging less than 30 in 21 games, despite his successes in the white ball realm. The batsman from Punjab, who scored a magnificent 128 against Australia in the last Test match played in Ahmedabad last year, has not scored a half-century in his previous ten innings.

He will definitely play in Vizag and let’s have a look at how he prepares for the next Test- Kevin Pietersen on Shubman Gill

After the first Test, Kevin Pietersen expressed his opinion to Jio Cinema that Gill will play in the second Test in Vizag and acknowledged that he was happy to watch the young batsman.

“I don’t think you can get rid of somebody as quickly as one test match. He will definitely play in Vizag and let’s have a look and see how he prepares for the next Test. Let’s not cast Shubman Gill aside and say he can’t play. He can play. When you talk about feelings, he give me the feeling of sheer joy and delight when he walks out to bat. I want to watch him bat,” Pietersen elaborated.

There is a reason why he is batting at No.3 – Kevin Pietersen on Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill’s Test stats are well below what one would expect for a batsman of his level, but Kevin Pietersen is still optimistic about Gill’s future.

With a fantastic tour of Australia in 2020–21, during which India achieved a historic 2-1 series victory, the young player got off to a great start in his Test career. Despite the occasional strong performance, his form in the format has subsequently taken an ominous turn for the worst.

“The average is not looking healthy and those numbers are a sight for sore eyes. You don’t want to look at them, But there is a reason why he is batting at No.3 it’s because of the kind of player that he is and what he can do. So I am not too bothered about two dismissals. What I would be bothered about is his performances in the second and third Test matches,” Pietersen said.

Kevin Pietersen also used the English team’s performance during their 2012–13 tour of India, when they lost the first Test but recovered to win.

“Let’s see where he goes, you are allowed to miss out on a Test match. When we came here in 2012, the whole team missed out on a Test match, but we came back and won the series. Let’s not write off a player because of numbers after one Test match,” he highlighted.

Gill will need to score runs in the upcoming game to maintain his spot in the starting XI, as Virat Kohli is expected to rejoin the team for the third Test and Rajat Patidar is expected to be ready to bat. On Friday, February 2, at Vizag, the second Test will begin.
