Ahead of the T20 World Cup in 2024, legendary Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting says David Warner’s poor record is not a major concern for Australia. Before the T20 World Cup in 2024, legendary Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting believes David Warner’s form is not an issue for Australia. Notably, Warner’s time with DC was hampered by a finger injury, therefore he didn’t have a great performance in the Indian Premier League 2024.

Regarding Warner’s performance during the T20 spectacular, Ponting stated that the southpaw got off to a strong start by taking a few solid blows against RR and CSK. But after his injury, he was unable to continue at the same level, and his tournament suffered as a result.

David Warner’s Form Will Improve

“He actually started the tournament really well. His scoring rate was really good. At the start of the tournament, he was opening the batting for us with Mitchell Marsh, and that combination was working really well. He (Warner) didn’t really hit scores, and then he got a nasty hit on his hand,” Ponting told ICC.

Speaking ahead of schedule, Ponting referred to David Warner as a “feisty competitor” and stated that he will be ready to play as soon as he dons the Australian jersey again.

“Basically, had the worst bone bruising and his contusion on the back of his hand that he’s ever seen. He’s a feisty little competitor that once the World Cup comes around, he hits the Australian colours back on again. Then I’ve got no real concerns about him,” he added.

Last Major Tournament

David Warner amassed 168 runs in eight innings during the 2024 Indian Premier League at a strike rate of 134.40 and an average of 21. At the end of the T20 World Cup, the southpaw player, who is participating in his eighth edition, will declare his retirement from international cricket. Warner will be playing in the tournament with his final Australian jersey, having stated earlier this year that he is retiring from Tests and ODIs. The 36-year-old, who has 806 runs from 34 innings at an average of 25.18 with six fifties, is the sixth-highest run scorer in T20 World Cup history.

After scoring 289 runs in seven innings during Australia’s maiden T20 World Cup victory in 2021, the opening batsman was named Player of the Tournament. With his fifth ICC trophy, Warner will be hoping to repeat his heroics in his farewell gig.
