AUS vs SA : AB De Villiers Lauds Dewald Brevis’ Ton

Dewald Brevis justified the hype around him with a blistering century in the second T20I against Australia. Dewald Brevis came out all guns blazing and scored a century in 41 balls en route to a 125 in 56 balls, including 12 fours and eight sixes. Dewald Brevis’ onslaught meant that South Africa posted a whopping 218 runs in 20 overs in a must-win game. Dewald Brevis became the youngest to score a century in T20Is for South Africa and also recorded the highest individual score in Australia.

Dewald Brevis lit up the Marrara Oval in Darwin on Tuesday night as he tore down a host of records for South Africa during their 53-run victory over Australia. The 22-year-old scored 125* off just 56 deliveries, in an innings that helped propel the Proteas to 218/7 in the first innings before a clinical bowling performance ensured that the hosts were bowled out for 165 to claim an easy win.

Dewald Brevis marks himself in the record books after a stupendous century

Dewald Brevis’ innings saw him take down record after record. This included the highest-ever score in a T20I match by a South African player, surpassing Faf du Plessis’ 119, and establishing himself at the top of his list.

Highest scores by South African players in T20Is:

Dewald Brevis – 125* vs AUS

Faf du Plessis – 119 vs WI

Richard Levi – 117* vs NZ

Reeza Hendricks – 117 vs PAK

Brevis also overtook Richard Levi as the youngest centurion for South Africa in T20I cricket, bringing it up at the age of 22 years and 105 days. Needing just 41 deliveries to reach his century, Brevis stands behind only David Miller in terms of fastest T20I centuries for the country. Miller had taken 35 deliveries during his innings against Bangladesh in 2017.

Brevis became only the sixth player to register a T20I century against Australia, joining the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Brendon McCullum, and Martin Guptill. He also now holds the record for the highest individual T20I score against Australia, surpassing Gaikwad’s score of 123* in 2023.

Remarkably, this was also the highest score by any player in any men’s T20I in Australia, with nobody having scored more than his 125*. The previous record was held by Shane Watson, who scored 124* at the SCG.This was also South Africa’s highest total against Australia, and included the second-highest partnership for any wicket across all matches through Brevis and Stubbs putting on 126 runs with each other.

With the ball, Kwena Maphaka kept his strong series going, picking up another three scalps to go with his 4-fer from the first T20I. Although he was expensive, he had an impact, but the same could not be said for Josh Hazlewood, who conceded his worst career T20I figures, of 1-56 in his four overs.

Former South Africa cricketer AB De Villiers reacted to Dewald Brevis’ brutal knock and said that the IPL teams had a golden opportunity to rope in Dewald Brevis in the auction, but they missed out badly. Dewald Brevis went unsold in the auction but was signed by CSK as an injury replacement. The youngster was one of the highlights of CSK in a rather ordinary season for the franchise.

AB De Villiers is in all praise of young prodigy Dewald Brevis after his thunderous 41 ball century vs Australia

Dewald Brevis lit up the Marrara Cricket Ground on Tuesday with the second-fastest T20I century by a South African as he dismantled the Australian bowling line-up in the second T20I. The swashbuckling batter smashed a 41-ball century to help South Africa post a mammoth 218/7 score in 20 overs after they were asked to bat first. Brevis went all guns blazing on the Aussie bowlers, who looked clueless about how to stop the carnage that the South African youngster produced in Darwin.

He remained unbeaten and smashed 125 runs off 56 balls, while his knock was embellished with 12 fours and 8 sixes. On a surface where other Proteas batters struggled to get going, Brevis made batting look a cakewalk with his ferocious knock. He brought up his maiden fifty in the 12th over with a maximum and didn’t stop after that, and converted it into a triple-digit score at a rapid pace.

His incredible batting also drew the attention of his idol, AB de Villiers, who heaped praise on him and said the IPL teams missed a golden chance to sign him, while Chennai Super Kings either got lucky or hit the biggest master stroke to sign him as an injury replacement in the middle of the season.

Even CSK had initially passed on him in the mega auction, but after Gurjapneet Singh’s injury, the five-time champions moved to correct that decision by bringing in Brevis as a replacement, adding the explosive middle-order firepower they had previously overlooked.

“There was such a golden opportunity for IPL teams to pick up Dewald Brevis at the auction! Missed out badly. CSK either got very lucky, or maybe the biggest master stroke ever. The boy can play @BrevisDewald,” De Villiers wrote on X.

The Proteas sensation joined CSK in the second half of the season and instantly became the fan favourite with a couple of crucial knocks. He smashed 225 runs in 6 matches at a strike rate of 180.00, which included a couple of half-centuries. CSK are a team that is set to undergo a transition, and Brevis could be one of the mainstays of the team if he can keep performing the way he is at the moment.Meanwhile, the second T20I is a must-win for South Africa after losing the first game by 17 runs.

However, due to Dewald Brevis heroics who is rightly called as “Baby AB ” in the cricketing circuit , the T20I series vs Australia has become more interesting heading into the final T20I on 16th August 2025 with series 1-1.
