In preparation for the five-match Test series scheduled to start on January 25, England’s speedster Mark Wood shared details on how the visiting team prepared for the Indian conditions during their training camp in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Mark Wood’s international career has experienced ups and downs. He is definitely an asset to England in all formats when fit and performing at his highest level. With his pace, he had the Australian batters ducking for cover during the home Ashes series last year, proving it.

When England last traveled to India for a Test series, their batters struggled to adapt to the rank-turners, and they lost 3-1. Wood asserted, nonetheless, that the guests are ready for this visit and are aware of what to anticipate from the conditions.

We’ve had flat pitches to practice simple and reverse swing – Mark Wood On England’s preparation for the marquee series

It will be intriguing to watch what part Wood plays in a series that is anticipated to be dominated by the spinners, as he is renowned for his true pace and enforcer skills. The pitches aren’t expected to have a lot of bounce or pace, so Wood’s only real advantage might be reverse swing, assuming it ever becomes relevant.

Mark Wood reflected on how the England team had prepared for the upcoming five-match test series against India. Before the first test, Mark Wood told reporters in Hyderabad the following:

“I think we’ve prepped really well in Abu Dhabi. We’ve made pitches, we’ve scuffed pitches up to make them spin, we’ve put sand down to make it spin, we’ve had flat pitches to practice simple and reverse swing. So, we’ve had all the facilities available in Abu Dhabi,”

We have to create a bit of a theatre or drama on the field – Mark Wood

In a major series like this, Wood emphasized the significance of momentum and said England’s main goal will be to put more pressure on India whenever they feel like they’re dominating. Wood added that they have to absorb the pressure and try to create some on-field drama, and when it’s the right time, attack again on the hosts.

“I guess it’s all about soaking up that pressure when needed, maybe when the Indian batsmen are on top. We have to soak up that pressure and create a bit of a theatre or drama on the field and then when it’s time, attack again. That’s the same with bat and ball,” Mark Wood added.

I think it’s almost like a bit of a free hit for us – Mark Wood on the opportunity to make history in India

There has been much discussion about whether England’s ‘Bazball‘ (ultra-attacking mindset) will be effective against the strong Indian bowling attack in Indian conditions.

Mark Wood nevertheless believes the guests have nothing to lose and can build on their December 2022 3-0 victory over Pakistan on the subcontinent.

“They (India) very rarely lose at home. I think it’s almost like a bit of a free hit for us where we can come in and try something different. We created history in Pakistan recently, becoming the first team to win every match. So, this is another chance to do something historic and try and beat India in their own conditions,” he stated.

When England visited India for a five-match Test series in 2016–17, they were soundly defeated 4-0. But they are still the only visiting team to win a Test series in India (2-1 in 2012) under the captaincy of Alastair Cook, which may give Ben Stokes and co. a lot of inspiration.
