On Thursday, January 11, in R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo, Sri Lankan leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga made an incredible comeback to international cricket by delivering a career-best 7 for 19 to lead his team to an eight-wicket victory against Zimbabwe and secure a 2-0 ODI series victory.

For Zimbabwe, it was a must-win game to level the series as the first ODI got washed out, and they showed great fight in the second ODI but ended up on the losing side.

Craig Ervine, the captain of Zimbabwe, chose to bat first after winning the toss, but his decision to bat first didn’t go well for Zimbabwe as Wanindu Hasaranga shattered Zimbabwe’s batting order in his comeback game to the international game after 7 months.

“Wanindu Hasaranga’s heroics collapsed the batting line-up of Zimbabwe”

Zimbabwe had a good start, scoring 40 runs without losing the first 7.4 overs, but the rain interrupted them in their footprints, and when they started again, they were unable to read Hasaranga’s spin variations.

He ripped through the batting order with his repertoire of googlies, sliders, and legbreaks, leaving Zimbabwe struggling at 67 for 7. Dilshan Madushanka, Maheesh Theekshana, and Janith Liyanage shared the remaining three wickets among them to bundle the innings of Zimbabwe.

In a game that was reduced to 27 overs per side due to bad weather, Zimbabwe was bowled out for a dismal total of 96 runs in only 22.5 overs, despite the efforts of tailenders Luke Jongwe and Wellington Masakadza, who scored 14 and 11 runs, respectively.

“Wanindu Hasaranga registered the fifth-best ODI figures”

After a seven-month absence, Wanindu Hasaranga made his record-breaking comeback to international cricket in this match. The spin-bowling all-round player claimed seven wickets to set the record for the second-best bowling stats for Sri Lanka and the fifth-best in ODI cricket.

The other four bowlers on the list of best ODI figures were Chaminda Vaas (8/19 vs. Zimbabwe), Shahid Afridi (7/12 vs. the West Indies), Glenn McGrath (7/15 vs. Namibia), and Rashid Khan (7/18 vs. the West Indies).

“After a sluggish start, Sri Lanka eventually reached the mark due to Kusal Mendis’ fifty”

Sri Lanka’s innings started badly as they looked to chase a revised score of 97, losing Avishka Fernando early. But Kusal Mendis was equal to the challenge, hitting an unbeaten 66 off 51 balls to guarantee the hosts would not have any more problems in their pursuit of 97.

Sri Lanka easily approached the low mark thanks to Mendis’ aggressive batting. In addition to Mendis, Sadeera Samarawickrama contributed 14 runs to help their team win in 16.4 overs.
