Uganda secured their maiden victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup by defeating Papua New Guinea by three wickets on Thursday in Guyana.

Pitch And Toss Factor

The Providence Stadium in Guyana is renowned for its slow, spin-friendly surfaces, presenting a challenge for both teams.

Uganda won the toss and elected to field first, hoping to utilise the freshness of the surface early on.

Papua New Guinea Batting Stutter

Papua New Guinea’s batting couldn’t seize the opportunity as openers Tony Ura and Assad Vala departed early, signalling a shaky beginning. Despite Lega Siaka’s brief resistance with 12 runs, wickets kept falling at regular intervals. Uganda’s bowlers, spearheaded by the disciplined Frank Nsubuga (2/4), capitalised on the early wickets, limiting Papua New Guinea to a below-par total of 77 runs in 19 overs.

Uganda’s Bowling Masterclass Stifles Papua New Guinea

Uganda’s bowlers stepped up on the big stage, delivering a disciplined performance that laid the foundation for their historic victory over Papua New Guinea.

Alpesh Ramjani bowled a tight spell, maintaining a good economy rate of 4.25, taking 2 crucial wickets, and delivering a maiden over. Cosmas Kyewuta, despite being slightly more expensive with an economy of 5.36, also picked up 2 wickets, adding significant value to the team’s effort. Juma Miyagi was the most economical bowler, with an excellent economy rate of 2.50, conceding only 10 runs in his 4 overs while taking 2 wickets, making it difficult for the opposition to score.

Frank Nsubuga delivered a standout performance, conceding only 4 runs in his 4 overs with an exceptional economy rate of 1.00. His 2 maidens and 2 wickets were crucial in applying pressure on Papua New Guinea.

Uganda’s Gritty Chase

Uganda’s chase also began wobbly. They lost their openers very early in the first 3 overs. However, Riazat Ali Shah (32 runs) steadied the ship with a crucial knock. Juma Miyagi provided a vital 13-run knock that further solidified Uganda’s winning probability.

The team managed to chase 78 runs in 18.2 overs with the contribution of Riazat, Miyagi, Ramjani, and Waiswa.

Papua New Guinea’s Furlough with the Ball

Despite a strong bowling performance from Uganda, Papua New Guinea’s bowlers failed to replicate the same level of control during their turn with the ball.

Alei Nao managed to maintain an economy rate of 4.00, taking 2 wickets and conceding 16 runs in his 4 overs, which was a decent effort. Norman Vanua, while also taking 2 wickets, was more expensive, with an economy rate of 4.75 and conceding 19 runs in his 4 overs. Chad Soper was economical, with a commendable economy rate of 3.25, conceding 13 runs and taking 1 wicket in his 4 overs. Assad Vala, though slightly more expensive with an economy rate of 5.00, took 1 wicket in his 2 overs, giving away 10 runs. John Kariko bowled his full quota of 4 overs but failed to take any wickets and had an economy rate of 4.50, conceding 18 runs.

Although PNG failed to constrain Uganda in the chase, the bowlers did rarely well with the very short run they had to defend.
