AUS vs PAK: “That’s Another Couple Hundred”- Pat Cummins Feels That Nathan Lyon Could End Up With 700 Test Wickets

Nathan Lyon, who was just 1 wicket away from his much awaited milestone of 500 Test wickets, Nathan Lyon achieved it on the day-4 of the first test against Pakistan. Australia registered a massive 360 runs wins against Pakistan in the recently completed 1st test match at Perth. Australia headed into the Day-4 with the lead 303 runs ahead and added 149 runs quickly with the help of Usman Khawaja’s 90(190) and Mitchell Marsh’s 63*(68).

Nevertheless, with the early blow from  Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood , the visitors collapsed. After the early wickets from the Australian pacers, the legendary off-spinner of Australia Nathan Lyon got there by dismissing Faheem Ashraf in the 28th over of Pakistan’s second innings as as Australia won by 360 runs to take 1-0 lead in the series.

Nathan Lyon joined the elite club of Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath, the Only two other Australians who have achieved the  500 wickets milestone before him. With his 500th Test wicket, Nathan Lyon joins the legendary club of Muttiah Muralidaran, Shane Warne, and Anil Kumble as the fourth spinner in the club. Nathan Lyon became the 8th bowler and only the 2nd off-spinner in history to pick 500 test wickets.

Australian skipper Pat Cummins has speculated that champion off-spinner Nathan Lyon may take 700 Test wickets, considering that he still has a significant amount of tests remaining. Additionally, Cummins disclosed that Australia is extremely at ease ahead of the Boxing Day Test, which will take place against Pakistan on December 26.

Following the match, Cummins believes that Nathan Lyon can play for a another four to five years. Before the next game, the New South Wales-man anticipates that the team will have a stress-free week. As quoted by Perth Now, Australian Skipper said:

“I still think you’ve got, say 40, 50 Test matches (left). That’s four or five years, 10 (Tests) a year. You probably average what? Four a game? That’s another couple hundred; 700. We love these conditions. We know these conditions really well. I think that’s what makes playing and winning away from home so difficult. So hopefully we’ll have a pretty stress-free week going into Boxing Day.”

Nathan Lyon played in all 100 Test matches that Australia played between August 2013 and June 2023. However, earlier this year, during his 100th Test match during the Ashes, he sustained a calf injury, ending his great run. His injury forced Australia to play without a frontline spinner for the first time since 2012. After his achievement of 500 test wickets, Lyon looked back on how difficult it was to miss play due to his calf injury. He said, as quoted by The Sydney Morning Herald:

“It’s something I’m very proud about. I don’t think it’s probably hit me yet. But there’s obviously been a lot of hard work go into the journey,” said Nathan Lyon.

“I’ve had a lot more bad days than good days but to be out there in the middle, back after doing my calf, with the special group of people, that’s pretty special to be able to take 500 in Tests.” he further added.

Now, It will be interesting to see that who further joins the elite club of 500 test wickets.
