Former England seamer Steven Finn believes that England needs to temper their aggressive instincts and exhibit measured aggression to succeed against India in the upcoming Test series. Steven Finn emphasized that the team can draw inspiration from their former captain, Sir Alastair Cook, who led England to a Test series win in India in 2012.

Cook stands as the last captain to win a test series in India. During the memorable series in 2012, the Essex opener delivered a stellar performance with the bat, amassing 562 runs in four matches at an impressive average of 80.29 which included 3 centuries with an highest score of 190.

Steven Finn offers advice to England cricket team

In an interview with ESPN Cricinfo, Steven Finn credited Alastair Cook and Kevin Pietersen as the key architects of England’s series win in 2012 against India.

“Alastair Cook ground them down and then Pietersen came out and played this knock and everyone was like, ‘Oh my word, we’re going to win this series’. That was the moment we all realised. I think England can take some of the motivation from the way that affected the way India played and try to take that into this series, but it has to be a measured aggression,”

The Sussex pacer said that England needs to apply pressure on India in stages.

“If you go 100 percent aggression from the beginning, I think you can become unstuck. But if you’ve given yourself a chance and then assert pressure back on India, that could serve England well,”

Under Ben Stokes’ captaincy, England has demonstrated an aggressive approach in Test cricket, evident in their impressive series win against Pakistan. However, facing India in their home conditions poses a formidable challenge, considering the prowess of the Indian team in the longest format.

James Anderson is superhuman- Steven Finn

Steven Finn expressed his belief that James Anderson remains a significant asset for England despite his age, emphasizing the invaluable experience he brings to the team.

“Jimmy is superhuman.People have been anticipating he will retire for about seven years now and he keeps surprising people and performing. He didn’t have a fantastic summer last year, but I know from knowing him as a character that he wouldn’t be doing this unless he felt he could make a difference,”

The first of the 5 tests is scheduled to start on January 25 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad. The following games will be played in Visakhapatnam, Rajkot, Ranchi, Dharamshala.
