Former Pakistani captain Salman Butt shared his thoughts about Team India’s squad selection for the test series against South Africa. Salman Butt feels that Arshdeep Singh, a left-arm pacer, would have been a better fit for the third seamer position in India’s squad rather than the speedster Avesh Khan
In the just-finished Boxing Day Test, which they lost by an innings and 32 runs, India’s bowling appeared toothless . The Men in Blue scored 245 runs in the first innings, but the Proteas responded with a huge 408 runs. Prasidh Krishna and Shardul Thakur had economy rates of 4.70 and 5.30, respectively. Each of the two seamers claimed a single wicket.
However, during the three-match ODI series between South Africa and India, Arshdeep Singh appeared to be in excellent form. He was declared the Player of the Series after taking ten wickets in three games. So Arshdeep Singh might be a better choice for India, as he was in good touch.
Arshdeep Singh might have been effective in the Test- Salman Butt
However, Salman Butt felt that Arshdeep would have had more of an impact than individuals like Prasidh Krishna and Shardul Thakur. In his most recent YouTube video, he stated:
“Instead of playing Prasidh Krishna or Shardul Thakur, it would have been better if India they picked Arshdeep Singh in the squad. He bowls over 135 kph and also swings the ball both ways. He might have been effective in the Test. Prasidh Krishna and Shardul Thakur gave a lot of easy boundary balls,” he elaborated (7:29).
Rohit Sharma is undoubtedly over the World Cup final defeat-Salman Butt
Salman Butt continued by saying that it would not be accurate to claim that Team India’s captain Rohit Sharma is still recovering from the team’s loss to Australia in the 2023 World Cup final.
India had a dominant tournament at the ICC, leading them to a 10-match winning streak going into the final. But in the summit clash, their juggernaut came to a grinding halt.
“I don’t think so. It’s a different game. He is a seasoned player who is nearing the end of his career and has a lot of achievements. It was a final, and India could not win; that’s it. I am sure he is over the World Cup final loss,” Butt commented (19:50).
The second and final Test match between India and South Africa will be played at Newlands in Cape Town from January 3–7, where Team India will be looking forward to bouncing back from the first test’s defeat.
