Pat Cummins‘ decision to withdraw from this year’s Indian Premier League, citing a full international schedule, stunned the cricket community. However, looking back, it’s obvious that Pat Cummins has benefited from his efforts in the IPL 2024 Auction.

The last year-and-a-half that Pat Cummins had, both as a leader and a bowler was incredible. Starting with winning World Test Championship, retaining the Ashes in England and then leading Australia to another ODI World Cup and now becoming the second most expensive buy in the history of IPL.

Australia’s World Cup-winning captain Pat Cummins continues to reap the rewards in 2023, as Australian pacer made history when Sunrisers Hyderabad broke the bank to spend an incredible Rs. 20.5 crore on him, making him the second most expensive purchase in IPL history.

Pat Cummins Thoroughly Justifies His Price Tag- Eoin Morgan

Jio Cinema IPL experts assessed Pat Cummins’ transfer to Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 20.5 crore during their appearance at the IPL 2024 Player Auction on Tuesday. Eoin Morgan, the former captain of England, praised the skipper of Australia and emphasized on the commitment Cummins has shown over the last year to merit his reward.

“The player that Pat Cummins is and considering the last year-and-a-half that he has had, both with leadership and as a bowler with the World Test Championship winning side, retaining the Ashes in England during the English summer and then leading the Australian ODI team to another ODI World Cup. So, recent form and confidence is a huge contributing factor,” Morgan commented on Cummins getting the high price.

Morgan further reflected on that it’s all about the demand and supply thing. He said there are few teams who are looking for a leadership roles.

“It’s also a demand-supply issue. There are quite a few teams looking for leadership roles to be fulfilled not only as captain but also in the changing room. So Pat Cummins thoroughly justifies his price tag,” he added.

The hefty price of Rs. 20 crores wasn’t expected- Anil Kumble

Anil Kumble, a former Indian spin superstar, provided an alternative perspective on the whole thing, indicating that although Cummins deserves all the credit, the Sunrisers may have been driven to aim high and sign Cummins because they desperately needed leadership.

“That’s a really high price. Rs 20 crores wasn’t expected. We knew he’d go for a higher price but Rs 20 crore, it’s created a record. SRH is perhaps looking for a captain and that could be the reason why we see the desperation to get in. Perhaps RCB were also looking at a long-term captain. Good luck to Pat Cummins. Three trophies, but this would probably take the icing on the cake,” said Anil Kumble.
