Shaheen Afridi, Pakistan’s recently selected T20I captain, stated that he was not injured and gave an explanation for why he was left out of the playing XI for the team’s third Test match against Australia in Sydney last week.

Shaheen discussed how his workload management led the medical team and think tank to recommend that he skip the Sydney Test. He asserted that if winning the series was still on the cards, he would have contributed in some way.

Shaheen Afridi had taken 113 wickets with an average of 26.71 and an economy rate of 3.11 in the 50 innings of test matches he played.

If there was a chance of a series win, I would have played because country comes first – Shaheen Afridi

Shaheen Afridi informed the media prior to the T20I series against New Zealand that he was completely fit, but as he bowled a bit too much in the first two matches, to manage his workload and avoid any kind of injury, he didn’t play the third test match.

“I am completely fit so there are no problems with that. I had bowled a bit too much in the first two Tests and there was so much fatigue that the team management and the medical panel wanted to avoid any chance of an injury. Even if there was a chance of a series win and I was 50-50, I would have played because country comes first. My priority has always been Test cricket,” Shaheen elaborated.

Babar and Rizwan will always be the best opening pair for Pakistan- Shaheen Afridi

According to multiple sources, in T20Is, vice captain Muhammad Rizwan would open with Saim Ayub, and Babar Azam would bat in the middle order.

However, Shaheen Afridi indicated that Pakistan will aim to experiment and identify fitting roles for the XI in the build-up to the T20 World Cup 2024.

“Babar and Rizwan will always be the best opening pair for Pakistan. I think we have 17 matches before the World Cup, and we should try different combinations and try to figure out which player fits in which position and we will try to play them in that position,” he said.

“There might be some changes, or maybe not. But the effort will be to have the team combination ready before England tour. In the four T20s against England before T20 World Cup, we should know our best playing XI,” he added.

On Friday, January 12, the first T20I match between Pakistan and New Zealand will take place at Eden Park. After completing the series against New Zealand, Pakistan have four T20I series scheduled against England before the 2024 T20 World Cup.
