Mitchell McClenaghan, the former New Zealand fast bowler, suggests that Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) should maintain their aggressive batting style despite their significant defeat to the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL 2024 match on Monday, April 8. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) could only score 137/9 in their 20 overs, facing a challenging bowling attack from Chennai Super Kings (CSK) that capitalized on the Chepauk conditions. A fan on Twitter criticized KKR’s aggressive approach, questioning the batters for not building substantial innings.

KKR is full of big hitters and no one played for their personal milestone today. Still I can’t understand why they scored just 137 today. A selfish 70(50) might have taken KKR to 160+ btw,” the fan wrote.

Mitchell McClenaghan responded to the fan, supporting KKR’s aggressive approach. He suggested that sticking to their strategy was the right decision, emphasizing that a single poor result shouldn’t lead them to play selfishly for personal milestones.

Sometimes you shoot for the stars and land on the moon. No biggie – their formula has worked so far no need to become selfish,” McClenaghan wrote.

There has been significant debate regarding strike rates in the shortest format of cricket, particularly during the current IPL 2024 season. Some argue that there should be a batter who can bat through the innings, while others believe that the shortest format has evolved to a point where there is no room for anchoring innings.

We fell short in terms of assessing the wicket- Shreyas Iyer on KKR

KKR captain Shreyas Iyer was candid in his evaluation of Kolkata’s performance against CSK. He acknowledged that the batters failed to read the conditions effectively and admitted that the Chennai bowlers were very accurate once the powerplay restrictions were lifted.

In the post-match presentation, Shreyas Iyer stated,

We fell short in terms of assessing the wicket. They know conditions pretty well, bowled according to their plan. It was tacky, wasn’t easy to go big right from first ball. It changed tremendously after power play and the way we were trying to construct our innings, didn’t go to plan.”

Despite the loss, Iyer sees a silver lining in the early occurrence of an off-day for the Knight Riders this season. He is hopeful that this setback will prompt the team to refocus on the fundamentals and address their shortcomings.
