Former Australian cricketer Tom Moody points out the fact that India could have chosen only one from Rinku Singh and Shivam Dube. The Indian selectors went with Shivam Dube instead of Rinku Singh in the 15-member squad for the World Cup. Rinku Singh is the probable or stand-by as one may say for the marquee event this year.
Both Rinku Singh and Shivam Dube can it the ball hard and long in the middle overs. Both their impact with the bat is almost same and both are left-handers. Having a left-hander in the middle and lower middle order helps the batting team as bowlers find it difficult to adjust their line. Rinku Singh came into the eyes of the fans when he hit Yash Dayal for 5 sixes in an over to win the match for KKR.
Rinku Singh made his T20 international debut against Ireland in Ireland in 2023. He has played 15 matches for Team India and has scored 356 runs with a strike rate of 176.24 which is very impressive. He made his Indian Premier League debut in 2018 and since then he has played 40 matches and scored 848 runs with a strike rate of 143.24.
Rinku Singh would have made it if he could bowl- Tom Moody
Tom Moody believes Rinku Singh’s exclusion from the 15-member squad has nothing to do with form but with bowling ability. He said:
“The way I see it, it had nothing to do with form, it had everything to do with the fact that Dube can bowl. If Rinku Singh could bowl, if both were identical cricketers, left-hand batters who could bowl part-time medium pace, he would be in that squad. The fact that Dube bowls, it gives them flexibility of different combinations and around balancing their side with either three or two spinners,”
This season in the Indian Premier League Rinku Singh has not got much opportunities to go and bat for his franchise. He has just faced 84 balls in this ongoing season. Where as it will be interesting to see whether the bowling capabilities of Shivam Dube are required for Team India in the World Cup.
Wasim Jaffer on Rohit Sharma’s form
Another reason to worry for the Indian Fans is the form of Rohit Sharma in the Indian Premier League as Rohit Sharma has got three single digits score in the last three matches for Mumbai Indians. Former India player and domestic legend Wasim Jaffer was present along side Tom Moody in the discussion. He said :
“You don’t want to go into the World Cup with that kind of form, but he plays a high-risk game. But on a big day, he will turn it up. That’s the kind of a player Rohit Sharma is. So I am not thinking too much about it,”
