Former Australian opener Matthew Hayden has stirred excitement with his bold prediction about Virat Kohli’s form ahead of the IPL 2024 playoffs. Matthew Hayden believes that the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) star, as per his recent claim, could surpass his outstanding performance from IPL 2016, where he clinched the Orange Cap.

Nicknamed “Haydos” for his imposing physique, Matthew Hayden’s career stretched across 15 glorious years. A left-handed batsman, he struck fear into bowlers with his clean hitting and ability to dismantle bowling attacks. He etched his name in history by scoring the highest individual score by an Australian batsman in Test cricket – a staggering 380 runs against Zimbabwe in 2003. Hayden’s brilliance wasn’t limited to the Test arena. He thrived in One-Day Internationals (ODIs) as well. Partnering with Adam Gilchrist, they formed a formidable opening duo during Australia’s golden era (2000-2008). This explosive pair consistently provided their team with strong starts, leaving bowlers around the world in despair. Since retiring from international cricket in 2009, Hayden has seamlessly transitioned into the world of cricket commentary.

Virat Kohli has been in phenomenal form in IPL 2024. He’s currently the tournament’s leading run-scorer, having amassed over 700 runs – the first player to achieve this feat this season. This resurgence is a welcome sight for fans, showcasing a return to his aggressive batting style. Opening the innings for Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kohli has been a key factor in their success, powering them into the playoffs.

Matthew Hayden’s Words

According to Matthew Hayden, the determination and hunger displayed by the veteran opener this season could propel him to surpass his tally from eight years ago. In his statement to Star Sports, Hayden highlighted Virat Kohli’s potential for surpassing his previous records.

He said, “He could go well past his IPL 2016 performance in the kind of form that he’s in. So more than anything, I just think it’s the energy and the love of the game, the passion, the commitment for it all—all of those describing words that you can glorify this great man with, whether it be on the field or with bat in hand. He just loves it; it’s crazy.”

Matthew Hayden also discussed Virat Kohli’s intensity on the field during RCB’s match against CSK. Hayden was particularly impressed by Kohli’s skill in rallying the home crowd in support of their team while cleverly responding to the CSK supporters, showcasing his remarkable wit.

The former Australian player said, “The thing is, he’s (Kohli) so committed. And he gives it to the crowd as well. There were a couple of moments where he was telling CSK fans to be quiet.”

RCB is set to face the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2024 Eliminator in Ahmedabad on Wednesday, May 22nd.
