Former Indian opening batter, Virender Sehwag opined that Shubman Gill should consider himself to be lucky enough to be included in the T20 World Cup reserve list, given his unpromising performances in this IPL season. The 45-year-old former Indian batter opted in favor of KL Rahul and Ruturaj Gaikwad being more deserving than Shubman Gill, given their performances in this IPL season.

Shubman Gill was the holder of the Orange Cap in the IPL 2023 edition, having scored 890 runs. But in this season it’s the total opposite. The youngster struggled to achieve 322 runs in his 11 fixtures at an average of 32.30, with only a handful of half-centuries in his name.

Shubman Gill should not let his place go once he gets a chance- Virender Sehwag

While having a conversation with Cricbuzz, Sehwag urged Gill, not to take his place for granted and to improve his gameplay to retain his spot.

“I think he’s lucky that his name is in the T20 World Cup reserves. KL Rahul and Ruturaj Gaikwad are not even in that. That’s a good point and he should be motivated by that. Next time, he should not let his place go once he gets a chance. He should focus on scoring runs at a good strike rate so he doesn’t get replaced,”

The Gujarat Titans skipper only managed to score 2 runs off seven deliveries against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on Saturday at Chinnaswamy Stadium. The Titans were able to score 144, only to hand over their win to the opposition, RCB.

Improve your skill and score big- Virender Sehwag urges Shubman Gill to perform at his fullest

Virender Sehwag specifically mentioned players like Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman, and Sachin Tendulkar never gave a chance to the selectors to doubt on their performances due to their consistency. he further stated:

“In my days, we had Ganguly, Tendulkar, Dravid, Laxman. It doesn’t matter how many runs the other guys scored, these guys didn’t go out because they never stopped scoring runs. How will you drop them if they keep scoring runs? They never gave a reason to get dropped,”

“This is what Shubman Gill has to learn. Once he returns to Indian team and plays regularly post the World Cup, he shouldn’t let such an opportunity arise again. Improve your skills and score big, because big scores will eventually save you,”

The Gujarat Titans skipper, Shubman Gill has been struggling to display his intimidation as they have already lost seven out of 11 fixtures.
