Rohit Sharma is yet to regain his composure after the heartbreak in the ODI World Cup. At least, that is the feeling. Rohit Sharma looked in two minds whether to attack or defend which hurt the team a lot. Perhaps, the batter should take a backseat and play long and sturdy innings which will frustrate the opposition

Forgettable outing for Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma did not trouble the scorers much in both the innings of the 1st Test match between India and South Africa. He failed to reach double figures in the match. India was shaky, and the South Africans had their tail up after getting his prized wicket.

Rohit Sharma did not seem to be active

One usually finds Rohit Sharma as the skipper in the thick of the action. He is proactive in field changes and makes smart bowling changes in a match. One was surprised to see Rohit asking Prasidh Krishna to start the bowling after lunch on the 2nd day. Many felt that Jasprit Bumrah should have started the session. He was bowling well with an impeccable line and length in the first session. It did not make sense for Bumrah to be held back then.

Prasidh Krishna and Shardul were not at their best and were thrashed by Elgar. He easily consolidated his innings by scoring boundaries and went on to play a match-winning knock of 185. The bowlers were bowling at a varied line and length, which was a clear indication that they had strayed from the plan. But the captain did not intervene to advise his bowlers or make any fielding changes.

The World Cup debacle and Mumbai captaincy row are fresh

Undoubtedly, the loss in the finals would have left Rohit Sharma shattered. He had taken a long break and was not part of the Australia and South Africa white ball series. One can understand the agony, we all felt it.

Let’s look ahead

But a professional and veteran like him will be the first to admit that the show must go on. It is time to focus on the current job. We want to see Rohit Sharma in the T20 World Cup in 2024.

Common Rohit, India needs you.

“There was a certain amount of underestimation”  – Sanjay Manjrekar tells ESPN Cricinfo. He was critical of Rohit Sharma’s captaincy IND vs SA 1st Test.
