KL Rahul is not the first preference for Test skipper Rohit Sharma as a wicketkeeper. That seems to be the undercurrent as per sources who cite a difference of opinion with coach Rahul Dravid.

De-Ja Vu for Dravid?

One can understand the emotional quotient in the decision. Rahul Dravid himself took up the role of a wicketkeeper for the Indian side when Saurav Ganguly asked him to do so. Always the team man, Rahul Dravid agreed that enabled the team to play an extra batter or bowler when the situation required to do so.

Why does Rohit Sharma feel KL Rahul should not be keeping in Tests?

Conspiracy theorists need not go gung-ho on a potential scandal. Several reasons can be attributed to his disagreement which has the best interests of KL Rahul in mind.

Wicketkeeping in Test matches is a different ballgame

The rigours of wicketkeeping in Test matches are daunting.  There are lengthy fielding periods that require a wicketkeeper to maintain total focus and concentration. There is not one moment to relax because of the cruciality of the role.

If spinners are bowling in tandem, the wicketkeeper is required to remain in a crouched position for a lengthy period which takes a toll on your back and thighs. The pace bowlers are bowling at an average speed exceeding 140 km/hr that smashes into your hands. Have you ever seen a wicketkeeper without crooked fingers?

The physical and mental stress of a wicketkeeper may affect the batting mindset of the player. In the ongoing Test, KL Rahul is the top scorer at the end of day 1. He will have to be behind the stumps after a long batting session.

KL Rahul did a good job in the World Cup

One has praise and respect for the manner KL Rahul went about his job in the recently concluded World Cup. He was one of the mainstays of the Indian team led to them playing the finals. One hopes that he will continue with his fine performances, not only as a batter but also as a wicketkeeper in the Test series.

‘I’m not sure how long…’: Rohit Sharma spills the beans on KL Rahul as India’s Test wicketkeeper after Dravid backing as quoted by Hindustan Times.
