West Indies cricket legend Clive Lloyd has thrown his weight behind the inclusion of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in India’s T20 World Cup squad. Expressing his views, Lloyd emphasized the importance of balancing youthful exuberance with the invaluable experience that the veteran duo brings to the table.

The ongoing T20I series against Afghanistan saw the return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to the Indian team, indicating the selectors’ confidence in their continued relevance in the shortest format. While Kohli missed the opening match in Mohali due to personal reasons, Rohit faced an unfortunate run-out dismissal, recording a duck on only the second ball of his innings.

The debate surrounding the T20 World Cup squad revolves around whether India should stick with the experienced pair or make way for emerging talents, especially in light of the team’s recent ICC trophy drought. Lloyd, a two-time World Cup-winning captain, believes that selecting the best team is crucial and that a blend of youth and experience will be essential for success.

“You want to pick your best team; you can’t just fill the team with youthful players. You need experience,” remarked Lloyd during a media interaction in Kolkata. “Kohli is still one of the best players around. Rohit is quite good as captain. So you pick your best team. You will have some young players too because you have so many cricketers here, and they are pushing the older players… and that’s how it should be. But I’m sure that you will have a very formidable side.”

Virat Kohli’s stellar performance in the previous edition of the T20 World Cup in 2022 has been a testament to his prowess in the format. Ending as the highest run-scorer with 296 runs in 6 matches, his innings against Pakistan, scoring 82* off 51 balls, was hailed as one of the best T20I knocks in history.

However, Rohit Sharma has faced challenges in the T20 format in recent years. With only 116 runs throughout the previous T20 World Cup and a modest performance in the 2023 Indian Premier League, where he scored 332 runs in 16 matches, questions have been raised about his form in the shortest format.

As the T20 World Cup approaches, the Indian selectors face the delicate task of crafting a squad that strikes the right balance between experience and emerging talent. The inclusion of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, according to Clive Lloyd, will contribute significantly to the team’s overall strength and competitiveness in the tournament.
