Sanju Samson‘s journey has often been characterized by being on the cusp of success, yet just out of reach. Despite consistently impressing for the Rajasthan Royals, he has seldom received consecutive chances to represent India, hindering his prospects of solidifying his position in the national white-ball teams.
In the sporadic opportunities he did receive, he failed to truly shine on the international stage. Consequently, despite a decade-long career, he hadn’t featured in a single ICC tournament. However, his patience was rewarded when Sanju Samson‘s inclusion in India’s 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies was announced.

Nevertheless, his selection for the T20 World Cup marks a dream fulfilled for the Kerala wicketkeeper-batter. While one might anticipate overwhelming emotions, Samson’s reaction diverges. Instead, his thoughts are occupied by matters closer to his heart. This isn’t to diminish the significance of representing India in the World Cup, but Samson remains composed, not allowing emotions to overshadow his focus.
“We spoke a few minutes after his selection to the T20 World Cup. But he was more interested in talking about the need for Kerala to win at least one trophy in the upcoming domestic season. “He was saying that more children will take up cricket in the state if the team gets some success at the national level,” he told PTI.

Regardless of rain or shine, Sanju and his brother Saly would consistently be found at the nets in the Medical College ground in Thiruvananthapuram. On one particularly rainy day, I doubted whether Sanju would make the journey from his home in Vizhinjam, nearly 25 kilometers away from the center.
“But he was there on time. He carried his (cricket) kit in which he also stuffed his school uniform, so that he could go to school after training. Even at that age, he had next level resolve,” said George.
Roots of Discipline: The Influence of Family on Sanju Samson’s Journey
Possibly, Sanju Samson’s sense of discipline was instilled by his family. His father, Viswanath, served as a football player with Delhi Police for close to two decades and steadfastly backed his son’s ambitions. He would organize practice sessions for Sanju and his brother alongside the Delhi Police team, where they frequently competed against much older cricketers.
“His father is a great source of inspiration for him, even when I first met him during his junior cricket days. He would come to watch Sanju’s matches without fail,” said Gomez.
Samson has been in exceptional form for RR this season, amassing 471 runs at a strike rate of 163. If he can maintain this level of performance during the World Cup, it would significantly benefit both him and the Indian team.
