ICC T20 World Cup 2024: Reserve Day Dilemma For Teams Playing Second Semifinal

With the 2024 T20 World Cup unfolding in the US and the Caribbean, teams gearing up for the second semifinal face a dilemma regarding the reserve day amidst concerns over the schedule’s tight turnaround. The unique dynamics of the tournament’s location and timing raise questions about ensuring fairness and logistical challenges for the competing teams in the knockout stages of the T20 World Cup.

The Dilemma in T20 World Cup

The T20 World Cup’s schedule in the US and the Caribbean appears a bit strange due to the possibility of a quick turnaround between the semifinals and the final. With the semis on June 26 and 27, and the final on June 29, there’s a chance one team might have to play both matches on back-to-back days, raising concerns about fairness and player fatigue.

While one might argue that such a situation is unlikely in June, considering it’s summer in the Caribbean, the International Cricket Council (ICC) and Cricket West Indies (CWI) have still scheduled reserve days. However, there’s still a possibility of an unusual occurrence, prompting the need for contingency plans.

If the second semifinal extends to June 28, the victors will face the daunting task of competing in the final within less than 24 hours. Moreover, they must traverse from Providence in Guyana to Bridgetown in Barbados during this tight timeframe. Notably, this could potentially affect India, should they progress to the title clash.

According to the schedule, India’s semifinal is slated for June 27 at 8:30 pm IST (assuming qualification). A Cricket West Indies (CWI) official mentioned that the International Cricket Council (ICC) governs the playing regulations for the tournament, thus refraining from providing comments.

When Cricbuzz reached out to the ICC for a response, which, through a March 15 press release, confirmed reserve days for the last three matches of the 55-game event.

Media Release of ICC

The ICC said through a media release after a board meeting, “It was also confirmed during the meetings that ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 would have reserve days scheduled for the semi-finals and final,”

If such a situation arises, the ICC might need to shift the final to its reserve days on June 30. However, they haven’t explicitly mentioned this yet. The World Cup commences on June 1.

An Unprecedented Situation

This presents an unprecedented scenario, as previous global events had ample spacing between the reserve day of the second semifinal and the final. For instance, in last year’s World Cup in India, the second semifinal played between South Africa and Australia, took place on November 16, while the final was held on November 19 in Ahmedabad.

In the previous Twenty20 World Cup held in 2022 in Australia, the second semifinal, featuring India and England, occurred on November 10, followed by the final on November 13. Going further back, during the T20 World Cup in 2021 in the UAE, the second semifinal, featuring Pakistan and Australia, took place on November 11 in Dubai, with the final between Australia and New Zealand at the same venue on November 14. Such closely scheduled semifinals and finals are unprecedented in recent years.
