Former England cricketer Eoin Morgan went ahead and back India’s all-rounder to get a sure start at playing XI of the T20 World Cup, mentioning that he might light up the tournament. India surely has entered the tournaments as everyone’s favorite but has been unable to win an ICC World Cup for over a decade. The last time India lifted the championship trophy was in 2013.

In the last edition of the T20 World Cup, India was forced to submit defeat to the winners England, having lost all wickets in the semi-finals in Adelaide. India then went on to lose the Test Championship final in England.

Shivam Dube has to play, I think he will set the worldcup alight- Eoin Morgan

Speaking of India, they have always failed to register wins during the most crucial times. Morgan said while the loss in Adelaide would hurt but losing the ODI World Cup to Australia in Ahmedabad would hurt worse. He opined that the spinners of India need to come forward to work as a team and also improve their power-hitting.

“I think they (India) can (win), because they have to go to a stage now where Adelaide would hurt, recently losing the (ODI) World Cup at home to Australia in front of 1,25,000 Indian fans,” Morgan mentioned while having a conversation with Sky Sports.

“The spinner will come into the game, the level of batsmanship will come into the game if the wickets slow down like we think. But also that excellence in power hitting is the point of difference for me. Shivam Dube has to play, I think he’ll set this World Cup alight,” Morgan further added.

While some may believe that India’s cricket in the short format has improved a lot since the beginning of the IPL. However, according to former England skipper Michael Atherton, it is ironic that the only time India has ever won the T20 World Cup was before the IPL came into existence.
