Reportedly, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is eyeing former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming for the position of Team India’s head coach. The BCCI has initiated the application process for Rahul Dravid’s successor and will be accepting applications for the next couple of weeks.

Rahul Dravid’s reign as head coach of the Indian cricket team (2021-2024) was a period marked by change and strategic development. Taking over from the successful tenure of Ravi Shastri, Dravid had a different vision for the team. Dravid inherited a strong Indian team, but his focus wasn’t simply replicating past glories. He aimed to build a team for the long haul. Dravid, known for his calmness and meticulous planning, brought in fresh talent and nurtured young players. India thrived under Dravid in Test cricket. They continued their home dominance and secured crucial away victories, solidifying their top Test nation status. However, limited-overs cricket proved a challenge. While India remained competitive, they lacked consistent success. Questions arose about team selection and tactics, especially in big tournaments like the World Cup.

BCCI Considering Fleming

Currently engaged with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Stephen Fleming’s association with the franchise remains intact for the time being. However, should he assume the role of Team India’s head coach, he would need to sever ties with CSK or any other IPL team. Notably, the contract duration for the next head coach, as outlined in the job requirements released by the BCCI, extends until December 31, 2027.

As per a report from the Indian Express, the BCCI regards Stephen Fleming as the perfect successor to Rahul Dravid post the 2024 T20 World Cup in June. The board values Fleming’s exceptional skills in man-management and his consistent ability to extract the best from players, factors that strongly favor his candidacy. Fleming’s track record of delivering remarkable results for CSK since assuming the role of head coach in 2009 further bolsters his appeal.

According to the report, initial discussions regarding the upcoming vacant position have commenced with Stephen Fleming during the ongoing IPL. However, the significant challenge for Fleming would be the extensive travel demands associated with the role, as Team India prefers a single coach for all formats. Despite currently managing other responsibilities, such as the Joburg Super Kings and the Texas Super Kings in SA20 and Major League Cricket (MLC) respectively, Fleming’s current schedule is comparatively less demanding than the rigorous international cricket calendar.

Team India’s senior players On Fleming

Allegedly, there is substantial internal admiration for Stephen Fleming’s coaching accomplishments over the years. Several senior players within the Indian camp are eager to collaborate with the New Zealander, considering his profound technical expertise as a valuable asset.

The upcoming coach of the Indian team faces a daunting challenge of managing a transitional phase across different formats. As numerous players in the squad are reaching a mature age, it is crucial to carefully groom and integrate the right candidate into the team for long-term success.
