England Cricket Board (ECB) astoundingly left out Jason Roy from the ODI WC 2023 squad. ECB have named a new opening pair in the form of Dawid Malan & Jonny Bairstow and can be deadly on a given day. Jason Roy‘s exclusion is a huge blow for the batter as Roy had played a key role in the ODI WC 2019 triumph.

In the place of Jason Roy, the batting sensation Harry Brook got a chance to showcase his credentials. The batter hasn’t played much ODI cricket but can be a dangerous batter. ECB would be hoping that the side under the leadership of Jos Buttler peaks at the perfect time.

Jason Roy has got a burning desire to still be out there- Matt Mott

England’s head coach Matt Mott was having an interaction with a BBC Test match special. Matt Mott pointed out that Jason Roy would be a part of the English cricket team as a traveling reserve. Matt Mott made it clear that Jason Roy still has got the burning desire to play for England in ODI WC 2023.

“I’ve got no doubt that if he got that opportunity, he will come out [to India] and make the most of it. In the spirit he has been in, he has taken it as well as you would have hoped. He’s determined to get back there, he’s determined to keep fit and get ready, should an opportunity open up,”  said Matt Mott.

“[Roy] has got a burning desire to still be out there. That’s exactly what you’d expect from a player who, he’s had his ups and downs over his career but what an amazing record he has had,” he stated.

“We’ve obviously picked that 15 for the World Cup and, until we get injury or illness, they’ll serve us well. The good thing about an India series, as opposed to Australia, is the fact that it’s not a big flight away,” he added.

“We can call up people at pretty short notice and travel quite lean as well. Obviously, Jofra will be there, but a lot of that is around him getting the servicing that he needs to get back to full fitness,” he concluded.
