Marcus Stoinis has accepted the fact that he was left off of Australia’s ODI team against the West Indies. The all-rounder claimed that he doesn’t “own” a spot on the team and that Aaron Hardie’s introduction and his removal “makes complete sense”.

Having been a key player in the middle order since Australia’s victory in the 2021 World Cup, Stoinis had known for some time that he would not be included in Australia’s first bilateral ODI squad following the World Cup. However, he is not retiring from ODI cricket and is still getting ready to be a member of the T20 squad in the lead-up to the World Cup in June.

After failing to create an impression, Marcus Stoinis was removed from Australia’s starting lineup halfway through the 2023 World Cup. The downturn carried over to the Big Bash League (BBL).

There needs to be a balance between keeping a core & bringing new guys in- Marcus Stoinis on Aaron Hardie’s inclusion in the team

In order to prepare for the Champions Trophy in 2025, the next major ODI tournament, Cricket Australia’s (CA) chief of selectors, George Bailey, stated he wanted to strike a balance between experience and giving some new guys a chance while announcing the squad.

“I had a few conversations with Andrew McDonald over the last sort of four to six months,” he said. “Spoke to George as well. In terms of selections, in terms of the fact that Hardie’s coming in, I think that’s brilliant,” Stoinis stated.

I think it makes complete sense after a World Cup. There needs to be a balance between keeping a core, and bringing new guys in. The next tournament that they’re looking forward to is the Champions Trophy, which is 18 months away,” he added.

I’ve got no intention of retiring from international cricket or anything like that- Marcus Stoinis

Marcus Stoinis went on to say that he doesn’t own any position in any sort of team, adding that he has no intention of retiring from international cricket.

“I’ve got no intention of retiring from international cricket or anything like that, but I think it makes complete sense. I don’t own any position in any sort of team,” Stoinis added.

In a T20 team, Aaron Hardie fills a similar role to Stoinis as a versatile big-hitter with a handy medium pace bowling. With 287 runs from eight innings with a strike rate of 131 as of Thursday, he is the third-highest run scorer in the BBL.

Soon after the BBL, Stoinis will play in the SA20

Marcus Stoinis also revealed that, after completing the BBL season with the Melbourne Stars, he’d head to South Africa to participate in the second half of the SA20 tournament.

He has committed to playing in the SA20 for the Durban’s Super Giants, which is an affiliate of his IPL team, Lucknow.
