Former England skipper Eoin Morgan has chosen Team India as his favorite to win the 2024 T20 World Cup, citing their strength even with injuries. Eoin Morgan believes the tournament, starting June 1 in the West Indies and the USA, will see India emerge as the top contender.

Eoin Morgan, the former England cricket captain, called it quits on his international career in June 2022. Morgan’s captaincy is what truly set him apart. He’s widely considered one of England’s greatest-ever leaders, having captained them to their first-ever Cricket World Cup win in 2019. His aggressive tactics and focus on limited-overs cricket also saw England reach the finals of the 2016 World Twenty20. Since retiring from international cricket, Morgan has transitioned into the world of cricket commentary. He recently participated in The Hundred tournament, playing for the London Spirit team.

India to Clinch the T20 WC 2024?

There’s a buzz around India’s chances of clinching the T20 World Cup 2024, and for good reason. India is favored to win the 2024 T20 World Cup for several reasons. First, they have a deep squad with talented players for every position, allowing them to adapt even if injuries occur. Former England captain Eoin Morgan highlights this depth as a key strength.

Second, India’s recent strong performances and winning streaks boost their confidence and momentum, which are crucial for success in high-pressure tournaments like the World Cup. While India is a top contender, cricket’s unpredictability means other teams also have a strong chance, and the winner will be decided by their overall performance in the tournament.

In Eoin Morgan’s Own Words

Morgan believes the Men in Blue’s strength and depth make them the strongest side in the tournament, even with injuries. He made these comments during a panel discussion on Sky Sports alongside former cricketers Nasser Hussain and Michael Atherton.

He said,

“For me, the strongest side even with injuries throughout the tournament is India without a doubt,”

“The strength and depth is incredible at the moment. We are talking about the players who missed out in the squad of 15 because of the quality they possess.

“They are favorites for me. The quality that they have on paper if they produce it I think they can beat anybody quite in the tournament.”

It’s worth noting that India last won the T20 World Cup in the inaugural 2007 edition under MS Dhoni’s leadership. The young Indian team defeated arch-rivals Pakistan by five runs in Johannesburg to lift the trophy.

Since then, the T20 World Cup has been a challenging journey for the Men in Blue. In the most recent edition in Australia, they were knocked out in the semi-finals by eventual champions England, suffering a 10-wicket defeat.

India will kick off their T20 World Cup campaign against Ireland in New York on June 5.
