In the clash against Pakistan, Shubman Gill looked so scratchy with the bat and very defensive as well. In the game, Shubman Gill played more than 30 balls and only scored 7 runs, and the former Indian player is concerned about his defensive approach at the top of the order.
The elegant young right-hander is usually a very free-flowing player, but against the lethal bowling attack of Pakistan, he was just looking to survive rather than score runs. On this note, Mohammad Kaif feels Shubman Gill needs to change his intent.
In his latest conversation with Start Sports, he talked about the defensive approach of Shubman Gill in the first match against Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2023. He stated:
“Shubman Gill showed no intent in that game against Pakistan. He had faced about 32 deliveries, and the only boundary he scored was down the leg side. So he definitely needs to work on his intent in the upcoming matches,” said Kaif.
Mohammad Kaif also pointed out one thing Gill can do in the indoor practice session
“When the ball swings at an express pace, you need to get into positions as quickly as possible, and that is something that Gill will need to do in the indoor nets session,” he stated.
“The side-arm throwers generally try to shape the ball into the right-handed batter, and that is something that will help him. If you see his wicket, he couldn’t bring his bat down at the right time, and his stumps were all around,” he added.
In that inning, Shubman Gill was certain to just survive the opening spell of quick bowlers, but at the end he could not save his wicket and went back to the dressing room without scoring much.
Shubman Gill displayed that intent against Nepal.
While chasing a very small total against Nepal, Shubman Gill scored an unbeaten half century, and he showed the intent to score quick runs in that match, which was a good sign for team India for the upcoming match against the archrivals in the super four stages of the Asia Cup 2023.
