Spinner Tabraiz Shamsi praised Proteas captain Aiden Markram and his bowling after South Africa’s exciting victory In a rain-shortened Super Eights encounter at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, South Africa prevailed three wickets over the hosts, West Indies, using the Duckworth Lewis method, securing their spot in the T20 World Cup 2024 semifinals in Antigua.

After reigning champion England, South Africa, captained by Aiden Markram, became the second side to advance to the tournament’s semifinals. Proteas was given a revised goal of 123 in 17 overs, and the match was cut short by three overs. In order to eliminate the hosts and advance to the final four phases of the current T20 World Cup, the Proteas managed to chase it down in 16.1 overs.

Stating that the captain is far superior to a part-time bowler. The 34-year-old Shamsi stated that once the captain performed well with the ball, Aiden Markram ought to bowl more frequently since it would build his confidence. Notably, Aiden Markram ended with numbers of 4-0-28-1, dismissing the dangerous Nicholas Pooran on the opening ball of his term.

Shamsi On Aiden Markram As A Spinner

“I actually always think that he under-bowls himself as whenever he’s the captain, he bowls less. He is a wonderful bowler and is a lot better than a part-timer. So, it was nice that as a captain he saw that there was something in it for him and he bowled those four overs,” said Shamsi in the post-match press conference. “It was nice to see what he did today. And when you see another spinner taking wickets, it gives you confidence as well,”

Shamsi, who came in for Ottneil Baartman in the West Indies playing XI, stated that the team has several match-winners and that no one person is under pressure.

“That’s one thing nice about our unit. If you look at the squad, there is no individual you can pick and say, ‘hey, this guy is responsible for making this team win’. There is no pressure on any one individual. We just have a lot of match-winners within the squad and on each day, someone finds a way to pull the game towards the team,” the spinner said.

With six points and a net run rate of +0.780, South Africa finished the Super 8 atop Group 2’s points table following their exciting victory over the West Indies. Aiden Markram and side will now face Afghanistan in the second semi finals of the World Cup.
