Aaron Finch, the former captain of Australia, said that he was fortunate to have certain umpire calls go his way when he was playing. He did, however, agree with Stokes that even greater accuracy in technology is needed to eliminate the umpire’s call.

Ben Stokes, the captain of England, recently stated that the umpire’s call rule in LBW decisions needs to be eliminated. This assertion has generated a great deal of discussion. After opener Zak Crawley was given out by the on-field umpire in the Rajkot Test, even though replays revealed that the ball would have only clipped the stumps, Stokes was candid in his opinion.

Former West Indies fast bowler Ian Bishop and former England captain Nasser Hussain have both made strong arguments for maintaining the umpire’s call. They think it gives decisions a more human touch because technology isn’t always perfect.

Now that I have retired, I can say it should be scrapped – Aaron Finch backs England skipper

According to Aaron Finch, technology is either appropriate or should not be used at all. He added that it is absurd to have two judgments that are both correct and can be made in any way. Here’s what Aaron Finch said in an interview with ESPN (24:20):

“I think it should be scrapped. You need to have technology that’s either good enough or don’t use it at all. Having two decisions that can be out or not out and both are right is just ridiculous. I have been a beneficiary of a few umpire’s calls. Now that I have retired, I can say it should be scrapped (laughs),”

Callum Ferguson, a former cricket player, was on the panel as well, and his point of view differed from Aaron Finch’s. According to his opinion (24:12):

“Nah I don’t think it should be scrapped (umpires call). They’re just being bitter about it because one decision didn’t go their way,”

You need to be a bit more realistic – Michael Clarke on England opener Ben Duckett’s statement

Another statement from the England camp that caused some eyebrows raised was Ben Duckett’s claim that the visitors deserved credit for indirectly encouraging Yashasvi Jaiswal to play an aggressive style of cricket.

Duckett was targeted by former Australian captain Michael Clarke, who reminded him of some of the Australia’s greatest batters from the past who played an aggressive style of cricket. He said (15:10):

“Duckett must have missed Australia for 20 years. Has he heard of Matthew Hayden, Michael Slater, Ricky Ponting, Damien Martyn, Adam Gilchrist? Mate, these guys used to smack them as good as anyone. So because you’re playing a switch-hit, a reverse sweep or a ramp shot, that doesn’t mean you’re batting aggressively either. You need to be a bit more realistic,”

Clarke made it clear that while he appreciated England’s Bazball batting style, he didn’t think they were the ones encouraging other players to perform well. On Friday, February 23, England and India will square off in the fourth Test at Ranchi.
