Former Australia captain Aaron Finch is set to participate in his last professional cricket match on Saturday, January 13, when the Melbourne Renegades face off against the Melbourne Stars.

The veteran opener, who has been a stalwart in the Renegades lineup since the inception of the Big Bash League (BBL), expressed that the occasion would be an emotional one for him. Finch stands as the second-highest run-scorer in the history of the BBL, trailing only Chris Lynn. Over his illustrious BBL career, he has accumulated 3311 runs in 106 matches at an average of 34.85, including two centuries.

Aaron Finch, who also captained the Melbourne Renegades to their only BBL title in the 2018-19 season, reflected on the emotional aspect of his impending final match. Despite his illustrious career, Finch mentioned that Saturday’s fixture holds a unique place for him, as he typically did not experience strong emotions during previous retirements. The match against the Melbourne Stars marks the end of an era for the cricketer in professional cricket.

The Victoria Cricketer as quoted by ESPN Cricinfo said,

I haven’t got emotional around any of my retirements, which is quite strange. But maybe tomorrow I will. This has been a huge part of mine and my family’s life for the last 13 years and have put as much time and effort into it as I can and, yeah, it’ll be sad, no doubt. But it’s time to move on and the next generation of players coming through are seriously good. So it’s in good hands.”

Aaron Finch, at 37, has had a distinguished international career, notably leading Australia to victory in the T20 World Cup in 2021. His retirement from all forms of international cricket after the 2022 T20 World Cup marked the end of an era for the dynamic opener.

“The title win was unbelievable”- Aaron Finch

Finch nostalgically reflected on the Melbourne Renegades’ triumph in the 2018-19 Big Bash League, where they secured a historic title by defeating the Melbourne Stars in the final. Finch said,

When you’re no longer captain, I guess that’s taken out of your hands a bit as well because you’re not in selection. It’s been difficult no doubt. It’s been something that I’ve been lucky with throughout my career actually that it hasn’t happened a huge amount of times. But to finish up here at Marvel will be really special as well. The title win was unbelievable. Especially against the Stars in a game where they well and truly had one hand, almost two hands on the trophy, and to drag it back and win that game was really special.”

Aaron Finch’s challenging form has aligned with the Melbourne Renegades’ struggles in the ongoing Big Bash League season. The team finds itself at the bottom of the points table, managing only one victory in seven matches.
