The talented Australian opener Usman Khawaja recently shed light on the biggest challenge he faced in his cricket career: fitting in and becoming comfortable with the Australian cricket team. Challenges faced by Khawaja
Born in Islamabad, Pakistan, Khawaja made his debut for Australia in a 2011 Ashes Series friendly, becoming the first Pakistani-born player to represent Australia. But it’s been a long and arduous struggle for him to win the respect of his teammates and gain a sense of belonging.

Usman Khawaja faced a potential end to his international career after being dropped from the test squad after the 2019 Ashes series. But he responded with an exceptional performance in Australia’s domestic competition, the Sheffield Shield. These impressive performances led to a recall in the 2021 Ashes Home Series against England.
Khawaja immediately made an impression, scoring centuries in both innings in a home test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). This showed not only his immense talent, but also his mental resilience and determination to prove his worth.
The feeling of belonging
During his time away from his national team, Khawaja felt a sense of belonging and respect from his teammates. This played an important role in qualifying Australia for its first ever World Test Championship final.
