Roston Chase was a star for West Indies as they PNG in their opening encounter at the T20 World Cup. With six balls and five wickets remaining, the West Indies defeated Papua New Guinea in the opening match of their home ICC T20 World Cup. In the game between the two teams at Providence Stadium in Guyana, PNG bravely defended the modest total while pushing the seasoned Windies until the 19th over. They also dismissed five different hitters over the innings.

After winning the toss and opting to bowl first at Providence Stadium, the Windies failed to finish the PNG innings well, giving up 37 runs in the final three overs. This allowed the visitors to reach 136/8, despite their initial wobbling at 99/6 after 17 overs. Batting at number four, Sese Bau thwarted the Windies bowlers with a courageous half-century (50 off 43 balls).

West Indies won thanks to a boundary fest put on by Roston Chase and Andre Russell as the asking rate increased to more than ten an over. Roston Chase was the team’s main motivator in the Caribbean. With his brilliant hitting in the closing moments, he ended the game and rotated the strike, which had been absent all through their innings.

Roston Chase Held His Nerves- Rovman Powell

WI skipper Rovman Powell appreciated PNG’s fight and expressed that he was happy to kick things off with a win during the post-game presentation on Sunday.

“Their plans were simple, and they play some good cricket. It’s important to get two points, and that’s what we did,” Powell began.

Powell chose to bowl after the Windies won the toss, and PNG managed to score 136 runs at the expense of nine wickets. Powell stated that they wanted to hold their opponents to even less and that they intended to tighten the screws on the bowling as the match progressed.

“It was 10-15 too much. As a bowling group, that’s what we want to tighten up. Since I turned captain, 70-80 per cent team has been playing together,” he said.

Roston Chase’s unbeaten 42-run knock with the bat and a tidy spell with the ball aided the Windies on their opening-day win and Powell was all praise for his player.

“Starting from the bowling effort, he bowled very well. And then towards the end, to hold his composure in a pressure game in WC, it’s pleasing for us,” Powell continued.

Powell did note, though, that his team did not perform to the best of their abilities, something he hopes to investigate further as the competition goes on.

“Weren’t up to the straps to the level we want to play. We were at 60-70 percent. Hopefully we can correct that for the second game,” he concluded.

The Windies’ next assignment is to play Uganda on the 9th of the month. On the 13th, they will play New Zealand. On June 18, the Powell-led team will conclude their group stage matches against the exciting Afghanistan.
