Ex-SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) coach Tom Moody thinks Pat Cummins and his team chose the correct mix of international players for their first match of the IPL 2024 season against Kolkata Knight Riders. Many were surprised when Travis Head was left out of SRH’s lineup for the game against KKR on Saturday, March 23. The team had spent a hefty 6.8 crore INR to acquire Travis Head at the IPL 2024 auction.

When asked by Sportskeeda during the ‘Star Sports Press Room’ show about SRH’s team selection, Tom Moody shared his thoughts on their combination.

“Travis Head is a dangerous player at the top of the order but they have also got three very good Indian top-order players, and then you have got Markram and Klaasen. I think this team has the right balance. The last thing you would want SRH to do is change their combination after game 1,”

Despite SunRisers’ narrow defeat by four runs to Kolkata in a last-ball thriller, Moody believes there is absolutely no need for the team to hit the panic button regarding their team composition.

The right four to start with- Tom Moody on SRH’s overseas picks

Tom Moody expressed the view that by appointing Pat Cummins as captain, the SunRisers have limited their flexibility in choosing overseas players, even though they have a deep roster with quality players like Wanindu Hasaranga and Travis Head.  Moody also highlighted the reasons Marco Jansen, the South African fast bowler, should not be left out of the team, explaining,

“Given they have made Pat Cummins their captain, they have limited that flexibility and what they can do. I think the four overseas players they had in that first game were the right four to start with because Marco Jansen has come into this tournament in very good form and was crucial to their success in SA20 and gives them that balance,”

SunRisers Hyderabad is set to face Mumbai Indians on Wednesday, March 27, with both teams eager to secure their first points of the season. Each side believes they should have emerged victorious in their previous match. This shared desire for a win could play a significant role in delivering another thrilling contest in the IPL 2024.
