According to Aakash Chopra, in order to acquire a captain, the SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) were compelled to pay a hefty price for Pat Cummins during the IPL 2024 auction. SRH acquired Cummins for ₹20.50 crore, and he became the second-costliest player in the history of the IPL.

The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) fell short of the SunRisers Hyderabad to get Cummins for ₹20.50 crore at the auction. They bought six players for a total of ₹30.80 crore; their other major acquisition, Travis Head, was ₹6.80 crore.

In 42 IPL games, Cummins has claimed 45 wickets at a mediocre 8.54 economy rate. In T20Is, the Australian seamer has performed better, with 55 dismissals at a respectable economy rate of 7.37 in 50 games.

“They didn’t enjoy Markram’s captaincy”-Aakash Chopra on SRH’s acquisition of Cummins at a hefty sum

In a video that he posted on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra expressed his opinion that the SunRisers Hyderabad may have paid a high price for Cummins merely to acquire a captain.

“I was slightly surprised. His Test cricket is unreal. He is one of the finest players. He captains the Australian team and does well – won them the Ashes and the World Test Championship and also won them the ODI World Cup, which is phenomenal. The big question is why 20.50 crores because IPL numbers are ordinary,” he explained (1:25).

“Furthermore, he added that they didn’t enjoy Markram’s captaincy, as they were searching for a new captain, and he came very expensive. Also, you see the Australian connection between Daniel Vettori and Pat Cummins.

“He has gone there only because he would be made the captain. There was a change in the coaching staff. You see Daniel Vettori there and his Australian connection, so you say that he should be made the captain as they didn’t enjoy Markram’s captaincy. They were searching for a new captain and he came very expensive,” he added.

“Even though they have plenty of openers, they also acquired Travis Head”-Aakash Chopra on SRH buying the Australian opener

Aakash Chopra isn’t impressed with the SunRisers Hyderabad’s choice to acquire Travis Head. He added that they already have three Indian openers available, so the question arises: why is one more required?

“They bought Travis Head as well although they have so many openers. They have Abhishek Sharma, Rahul Tripathi and Mayank Agarwal. When you have three Indian openers available, you ask why one more is required, but they wanted Travis Head as well,” he explained (4:05).

The former cricket player, who is now a commentator, believes Head’s signing suggests Aiden Markram might not be included in the starting lineup for SRH. He went on to say that if we kept Head’s current form aside, his T20 numbers are also as ordinary as Cummins.

“If we leave the recency bias aside for some time, his T20 numbers are as ordinary as Pat Cummins, but they have kept him, which means they are thinking differently. It means Aiden Markram might not get a chance to play at all,” he added.

According to Aakash Chopra, Pat Cummins, Heinrich Klaasen, and Head will hold three of the four overseas spots in the playing XI for SRH. He continued by saying that the final foreign player’s slot will probably be taken by Glenn Phillips or Marco Jansen.
