Excerpts

1. Given the common belief that experience trumps youth, what motivated you to pursue a career in talent scouting despite this perspective?

While it’s true that experience is highly valued in many fields, including talent scouting, I believe that there’s also a unique advantage to having a fresh perspective. Youth brings with it a keen eye for emerging trends, and a willingness to explore unconventional paths. In the dynamic world of talent scouting, being attuned to the latest developments and having an open-minded approach can lead to discovering talents that might be overlooked by more experienced individuals. Additionally, my passion for identifying and nurturing potential, along with my dedication to continuous learning, fuels my drive to succeed in this field regardless of the conventional perspective on experience.

(2) The young generation doesn’t have an interest in this scouting field , what’s your advice for the youths as a youth?

As a fellow youth, my advice to young individuals who might not initially consider talent scouting is to explore the hidden opportunities within the field. Talent scouting isn’t just about finding stars; it’s about identifying potential, connecting with people, and making a positive impact on their lives. It’s a chance to be part of someone’s journey towards success and growth.

Think about the joy of helping someone unlock their potential and achieve their dreams. Embrace the learning experience that comes with scouting diverse talents and gaining insights into different industries. So, while it might not be the most obvious choice, it can be an enriching and fulfilling path to consider. Keep an open mind, and you might find that talent scouting aligns perfectly with your passions and aspirations.

(3) What are the key qualities of a Good Talent Scout?

Your success as a scout depends on the kind of players you pick and how well they do. When you scout, players might not be big, but they eventually can become popular and that’s when you earn the trust of the franchise. It’s not like you have to play 100 Test matches for the country to be a great scout. All you need is a keen eye for the game.

Apart from this I think, the curiosity of finding talents and passion for the role as a passionate scout is driven to discover talents even when challenges arise.

(4) We have seen that you have worked with WPL Franchisees for recommendations of players, can you share your experience?

I’m thrilled to reflect on the wonderful experience I had with WPL franchisees. The most rewarding aspect of my recommendations was seeing the players I endorsed become part of the auction and eventually be chosen by the franchises. Looking back a couple of years, the journey was incredibly fulfilling – from traveling to different states and covering matches at my own expense to passionately evaluating talents. All the effort I invested feels incredibly worthwhile, happy to invest in women’s cricket..

5. Having developed connections with several Indian male cricketers, what influenced your decision to also engage with the world of women’s cricket?

Sports women’s in India has got immense unexplored potential, and my aim is to bring all my resources together and bring a change in the current scenario. The decision to engage with women’s cricket was to contribute to the growth of the sport. While I had established connections with male cricketers, I recognised the untapped potential in women’s cricket and felt compelled to play a role in its development. Witnessing the rising popularity of the women’s game and understanding the impact that increased visibility and support could have on aspiring female players motivated me to extend my involvement. Ultimately, empowering young female athletes, and being part of the positive transformation of women’s cricket.

(6) In a rapid changing cricket landscape , how do a scout stay updated , with emerging players , playing styles , talent hotspots to ensure his scouting efforts remains relevant?

Certainly! Staying updated in the dynamic cricket landscape involves dedicated research. This includes actively seeking cricket news and insights on social media platforms to learn about emerging talents and evolving playing styles. Scouts should also monitor domestic and youth tournaments, and attending matches in person offers valuable experience of player’s abilities and styles. Focusing on young players aids in early talent identification. Additionally, utilizing player videos is a valuable tool for understanding techniques, strengths, and weaknesses.

(7) What challenges as a young cricket scout have you faced in scouting which is quite a relative terms in sports ?

As a young cricket scout, I’ve encountered challenges because deciding who’s talented can be different for everyone in the sports world. Cricket has many ways to shine, not just numbers. Figuring out how good a player might become as they play at higher levels is tricky, like predicting the future. To handle this, I’ve talked to experienced scouts, looked at data, and focused on special qualities players have. Learning from coaches who know a lot has helped me improve. Even though talent in cricket can mean different things, I keep learning and getting better at finding great players.

One challenge youth face is that there are no courses or exams for this role. That makes it tough to know how to become a scout. But by learning from others and gaining experience, I’m finding my way.
