Suryakumar Yadav, who had been facing some pressure, showcased his class on Thursday by leading Mumbai Indians (MI) to a thrilling victory against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in IPL 2024 at the Wankhede Stadium. Following Jasprit Bumrah’s exceptional bowling performance, the batting duo of Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar took charge, attacking the RCB bowlers aggressively as MI comfortably chased down the target of 197 with 27 balls remaining.

In a spectacular display of batting, Mumbai Indians’ openers Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma set the stage with a scintillating 101-run partnership. After their dismissals, Suryakumar Yadav took charge, smashing a quickfire 52 off just 19 balls. His innings, which included four sixes and five fours, proved to be the game-changer, guiding Mumbai Indians to their second consecutive victory in IPL 2024. This performance was particularly crucial for Suryakumar, who had returned from an injury layoff and started the season with a duck.

It’s always good to be back at Wankhede- Suryakumar Yadav

Reflecting on his match-winning innings after Mumbai Indians’ emphatic victory, Suryakumar Yadav expressed that even though he was not physically with the MI team, mentally, he felt fully immersed in the game at the Wankhede Stadium.

It’s always good to be back at Wankhede, when the tournament started I was mentally here only, although physically in Bangalore (recovering from the injury), it felt like I never left,” Suryakumar said.

“When you are chasing 200, it is important to know the dew factor and take your chances, both Rohit and Ishan did the job for us at the 10th over mark and we only knew that we had to finish early for that net run rate thing. I just try to play to the field and practice these shots and it is just muscle memory (talking about his freak shots) and I go out there and enjoy myself. The slice over point is the one that I enjoyed the most,” he added.

It’s been almost 2-3 years since I batted against Bumrah in the nets- Suryakumar Yadav

Suryakumar Yadav lauded Ishan Kishan’s performance, stating,

The management told him (Ishan) to go out and enjoy, he has worked really hard on his batting and is just enjoying the fruits now.”

Before wrapping up, Suryakumar Yadav also commended Jasprit Bumrah’s achievement of taking his second five-wicket haul in the IPL. He humorously mentioned that he avoids facing Bumrah in the nets to spare either his bat or his toes from the pacer’s fiery deliveries.

It’s been almost 2-3 years since I batted against him (Bumrah) in the nets, because he either breaks my bat or breaks my foot,” he concluded.
