Michael Vaughan, former England international and Captain made strong comments on Pakistan after their defeat against India in the group stage of ICC T20 World Cup. He pointed out the mindset of Pakistani players and their staff saying that they lack belief in them to beat the mighty Indians.

Former cricket players have widely criticized Pakistan’s players for their subpar performance after their defeat. Nonetheless, Michael Vaughan believed that their defeat was more due to their lack of confidence in their ability to defeat India than the challenging ground in New York.

Babar Azam’s led side lost the opening two matches of their World Cup campaign against the USA and India respectively. Against the USA they lost in the super over after a poor all-round performance and against India they could not chase a small target of less than run a ball.

Michael Vaughan On Pakistan

Michael Vaughan speaking about the mindset of Pakistani players when they face India in a World Cup event. He pointed out that the players lack the killer mindset and belief to defeat their arch rivals India. He said :

“Pakistan just cannot beat India. I mean, they’re chasing 120. The pitch is a little bit… It’s an iffy pitch. I would say it probably did more when India were batting. There was more of a kind of sticky, stoppy kind of motion to the pitch when India were batting. When Pakistan batted, actually the pitch played okay and they still couldn’t get 120. They don’t believe. That’s my fundamental summary of the game is Pakistan, they… Do not believe they can beat India. Simple as that,” said Michael Vaughan on the Club Prairie Fire podcast.

It is clear according to Michael Vaughan that Pakistan player need to work more on their mindset when they face India in the World Cups.

Pakistan’s Poor Fielding Show On A Big Day

Notably, Pakistan was disorganized throughout the match against India as they missed a catch and handed up easy runs in the field. Usman Khan dropped Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant early in his innings, giving him a life. Ultimately, the southpaw’s innings of 42 (31) laced with six fours proved to be his team’s highest scorer and the difference between India reaching 120 and India reaching 100.

In the second innings, Pakistan were on course during their chase being on 72/2 after 12 overs and needed a run-a-ball 48 runs to win. However, disciplined bowling by the Indian bowlers pulled things back in their favour as pressure mounted on Pakistan.

Indian spearhead Jasprit Bumrah (3/14) dismissed a well-set Mohammad Rizwan (31 off 44) at a crucial time in the match, following which Pakistan succumbed under pressure and eventually fell six runs short of the target. Following their loss, Pakistan find themselves on the verge of being knocked out of the tournament.

Pakistan have to win with big margin against Ireland and hope for other results to go their way if the want to qualify for the Super 8s.
