‘Lust Stories 2’ Movie Review

Spread the love

The much-anticipated sequel, ‘Lust Stories 2,’ fails to live up to the brilliance of its predecessor. While Konkona Sen Sharma’s segment shines with remarkable performances, the anthology as a whole falls short of expectations. Let’s delve into each film and examine its strengths and weaknesses.

Konkona Sen Sharma’s Redemption

Konkona Sen Sharma, known for her directorial prowess in ‘A Death in the Gunj,’ presents a captivating segment in ‘Lust Stories 2.’ Exploring the themes of class, space, and female desire, Sen Sharma delivers a layered and thought-provoking narrative. With brilliant performances by Tillotama Shome and Amruta Subhash, this segment stands out as the gem of the anthology.

R. Balki’s Strangely Coy Tale

R. Balki’s contribution to ‘Lust Stories 2’ feels oddly restrained. The story revolves around Arjun (Angad Bedi) and Veda (Mrunal Thakur), who are on the verge of tying the knot. However, Veda’s grandmother (Neena Gupta) intervenes with a bold suggestion—to test the couple’s sexual compatibility before marriage. The film meanders into metaphors about “eruptions” on Mount Fuji, but it lacks the spark and charm of Balki’s previous works. Neena Gupta’s casting feels predictable, diminishing the surprise factor.

Sen Sharma’s Mumbai Mosaic

Sen Sharma’s segment begins with a vivid portrayal of Mumbai, where the worlds of Isheeta (Tillotama Shome), a wealthy designer, and her maid, Seema (Amruta Subhash), collide. Isheeta accidentally stumbles upon Seema engaging in an intimate act with her husband, leading to a complex web of interactions and secrets. Through skillful storytelling, Sen Sharma presents a messy yet intriguing tale that examines voyeurism from a female perspective. Shome’s nuanced performance grounds the film beautifully.

Sujoy Ghosh’s Familiar Ground

Sujoy Ghosh’s segment in ‘Lust Stories 2’ takes us on a familiar journey following his recent success, ‘Dahaad.’ Vijay Varma’s character encounters his long-lost ex-wife, Shanti (Tamannaah Bhatia), in a peculiar setting. However, Ghosh’s attempt to create a thriller falls flat, lacking the depth and impact of his previous works. While the on-screen pairing of Tamannaah and Varma may have sparked off-set, the segment fails to leave a lasting impression.

Amit Sharma’s Dark Fairy Tale

Amit Sharma takes a departure from the comedy genre with his segment, presenting a dark fairy tale set in a temple town in central India. Chanda (Kajol), trapped in a suffocating life, yearns to send her son abroad for higher education.

However, her husband’s oppressive nature and unwelcome advances toward their new maid complicate matters. Despite Kajol’s commendable performance, the film struggles to establish logical and emotional coherence. The conclusion feels unsatisfying, leaving loose ends untied.

Verdict

Anthologies hold a significant place in our vibrant film culture. However, ‘Lust Stories 2’ falls short of its potential, lacking the consistency and impact of its predecessor. While Konkona Sen Sharma’s segment shines brightly, the remaining films fail to leave a lasting impression. It is my hope that producer Ashi Dua explores new and unexpected avenues in future endeavors, delivering fresh and captivating narratives to captivate audiences.
