Wasim Akram, a Pakistani cricket legend predicted that the former captain of Mumbai Indians (MI) Rohit Sharma, won’t be playing anymore for the five-time champion franchise, Mumbai Indians from the IPL 2025 edition. Hardik Pandya replaced Rohit Sharma as the captain of Mumbai Indians in this IPL 2024 edition, a decision that has drawn a lot of negative remarks and reactions from the MI fanbase.
Mumbai Indians have been a total disappointment in this IPL 2024 edition. The franchise has only won four matches out of 12 games. Currently, they are at the 9th number in the points table. Wasim believes that Rohit Sharma would be a perfect choice for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
While speaking to Sportskeeda on SK Match Ki Baat, Wasim Akram opined that the comradeship between Shreyas Iyer, Gautam Gambhir, and Rohit Sharma would be a fruitful decision for KKR. He stated:
“I have a feeling, he won’t be at Mumbai Indians next season. I would love to see him at KKR. Imagine him open there, Gauti as a mentor, Iyer as a captain. They will have a very strong batting, at that wicket (Eden Gardens). He bats very well on any wicket, he is that great a player. But it will be good to see him at KKR.”
Rohit Sharma has amassed a total of 330 runs in the IPL 2024 so far from 12 matches, having an average of 30 with a strike rate of 152.76. His recent performance has been of great concern amongst the fans since he will lead the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup next month.
Wasim Akram lauds KKR on their outstanding performance in IPL 2024
Wasim Akram has been on a journey with KKR as their coaching staff for a long time. He is eagerly waiting for KKR to show their incredible prowess in batting and bowling. No doubt Gautam Gambhir deserves a lot of praise for his mentorship, but Wasim is more impressed with Shreyas Iyer for his incredible decision-making on-field and his well-organized team.
On this, he mentioned:
“This was Gautam Gambhir’s KKR and will remain his KKR. He sits off the field and talks to the players. But once the game is on, it is under the captain. Their captain has also done well and also scored runs at different positions. He (Iyer) know that Gautam is there to take care of things.”
Currently, KKR holds the top position in the points table with eight wins from 11 matches. They (KKR) will have to make it to the top two spots to get an additional shot at the ‘Finale’.
