Kolkata Knight Riders(KKR) defeated Mumbai Indians in their home ground Wankhede Stadium on Friday and their exile of 12 years came to an end. Kolkata was devastated in the powerplay after losing the toss, Mumbai Indians had elected to bowl first, which was the right decision until the powerplay, and Kolkata lost 4 wickets.
After the powerplay match took a great twist Southpaw batsmen Venkatesh Iyer and season campaigner Manish Pandey who was an impact player substituting for Angakrish Raghuvanshi and both of them put a solid partnership of 83 runs and registering 169 runs onboard, then all players lost their wicket. Bumrah shone with the ball once again and picked 3 wickets conceding 18 runs, another bowler Nuwan Thushara also scalped 3 wickets, and that was also in powerplay. Skipper Hardik Pandya also showed his performance with the ball picking 2 wickets and a run out of Russell.
In return, Mumbai Indians again failed to give a solid start Ishan and Rohit both lost their wicket in powerplay and the score was 46/3. Suryakumar Yadav smashed yet another half-century in vain and Aussie star bowler Mitchell Starc was the hero of the match he scalped 4 wickets and spoiled the party. Venkatesh Iyer was adjourned as Player of the Match for his crucial innings of 70 runs.

Mumbai Indians had won the toss and elected to bowl first which was the correct decision taken by Hardik Pandya, Kolkata lost their first wicket in the first over itself explosive Phil Salt got out on Nuwan Thushara’s ball. Next Angakrish Raghuvanshi was on the radar and he too lost his wicket then skipper Shreyas Iyer also lost his wicket now Kolkata was in big trouble and they lost another wicket of Rinku Singh. Powerplay was quite better despite losing wickets Kolkata was able to score 57 runs. Nuwan Thushara was the hero of the powerplay.
Venkatesh Iyer and Manish Pandey capitalized and stabled Kolkata
When the powerplay was concluded Kolkata was 57/4 and they lost another wicket Kolkata had succumbed but Venkatesh Iyer and Manish Pandey stayed at the crease and scored runs. The situation was very critical and their partnership held their innings strongly and the scoreboard was also running smoothly. Venkatesh Iyer and Manish Pandey registered an 83-run partnership which was the turning point of the match and took the score to 169. Venkatesh Iyer scored 70 runs and Manish Pandey scored 42 runs.
Kolkata bowlers dominated over Mumbai batters
In return when Mumbai came to bat not have an ideal start which everyone was expecting again openers failed to give a solid start and lost their wicket in the powerplay. Mumbai struggled more than Kolkata in powerplay as they were able to score just 46 and lost 3 wickets. Everyone had thought 170 would be chased down easily but the spin attack was more dangerous as the pitch was dry so it was a turning wicket which helped Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy and picked 2 wickets each.
Suryakumar Yadav was a lone warrior he scored a half-century of 56 runs but failed to reach the target, Tim David was also helpless as he scored just 24 runs as got out on Starc’s ball. Starc who is the highest-paid player in the history of IPL glimpses was witnessed by everyone in Wankhede proved why he was bid as the highest-paid player in IPL, he picked 4 wickets and changed the whole scenario of the match and Kolkata won the match by 24 runs.
Venkatesh Iyer was adjourned as a player of the match. Both teams will now face each other on 11 May at Eden Gardens. Mumbai has been eliminated technically from the tournament. Kolkata have made their made position more strong after winning the match against Mumbai Indians.
