With the absence of regular captain Rishabh Pant for the 2023 Indian Premier League season, veteran Aussie opener David Warner will lead Delhi Capitals (DC) with all-rounder Axar Patel as his deputy.
The upcoming season of the IPL  is going to see a lot of new faces in the captaincy roles. From Sunrises Hyderabad (SRH) to Punjab Kings (PBKS), however, for the Delhi Capitals side, the choice was accidental rather than performance-based since Rishabh Pant will be sidelined for a long due to injuries sustained in a car accident in December 2022.

David-Ponting Equation

While the role could be somewhat temporary given that Delhi Capitals have shown full faith in Rishabh Pant as their captain and he is expected to take up his role whenever he returns. The Capitals camp this season will have an all-Australian flavor as David Warner and Head  Coach Ricky Ponting unite.

“David will be our captain and Axar Patel will be his deputy,” a member of the ownership group of Delhi Capitals told Cricbuzz.

Named in as the vice captain Axar was a candidate for the captaincy, but the  management eventually chose to give the position to Warner because of the experience he carries. The fact that Pant will return the next year has also been taken into account while it is believed that Ricky Ponting is their coach also had an impact on the selection of Warner.

Warner- The Captain

Warner who was also a part of the Delhi capitals in 2009 rejoined the side for the 2022 season after an acrimonious split with SRH. And just one season in the 36-year-old has been entrusted with the responsibility looking at his previous profile.
