Sunil Gavaskar suggests that if KL Rahul is slated to bat at No. 4 for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in IPL 2024, Nicholas Pooran should take the No. 3 position in the batting order. As part of their strategy, the Lucknow-based franchise has acquired Devdutt Padikkal from the Rajasthan Royals (RR), likely with the intention of deploying him as an opening batsman.

In a recent discussion on Star Sports, Sunil Gavaskar shared his insights on the batting lineup of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in IPL 2024, particularly if KL Rahul is positioned in the middle order.
“They are a good team. They have been a team which has somehow always played above their potential. If they continue to do that, they will be in the periphery of the top four all the time. KL Rahul might bat at No. 4, Nicholas Pooran can bat at No. 3,”
Sunil Gavaskar, the former India captain, emphasized the importance of Nicholas Pooran occupying the No. 3 batting position for the Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2024.
“Nicholas Pooran, the more overs that he gets, the more destructive he can be. I saw in the Major League Cricket, he was just sensational. So clearly I think Pooran needs to get a few more overs,” he reasoned.
Sunil Gavaskar expressed his belief that the Lucknow Super Giants boast a strong batting lineup.
“Quinton de Kock, the opening bat. Devdutt Padikkal, who they have bought, might be the opener with him. So I think their batting seems to be definitely sorted. It’s the bowling where they need to do a little bit more so that they continue to be in the top four,”
Besides Quinton de Kock, Lucknow Super Giants possess an overseas opening choice in Kyle Mayers. Marcus Stoinis and Krunal Pandya are anticipated to fill the middle order alongside Rahul and Pooran, with options like Deepak Hooda, Ayush Badoni, and Prerak Mankad available for the remaining batting positions.

Sunil Gavaskar expressed optimism about Lucknow Super Giants’ chances of qualifying for the playoffs in IPL 2024, given their strong batting lineup and potentially balanced squad composition.
“Good chance of being there. They have somebody who will really egg them on in Justin Langer, somebody who played his cricket totally with his heart on his sleeve. If the players can do the same for Lucknow, then certainly they will be in with a good chance,”
Lucknow Super Giants have demonstrated consistency by finishing in the third position in the league phase for the past two seasons of the IPL. However, they faced elimination in the playoffs, losing in the Eliminator to Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2023 and to Mumbai Indians in the previous season.
