Justin Langer, the Australian legend, shared his take on Virat Kohli’s sacking from the ODI Captaincy. Indian Cricket team went through sweeping changes in 2021-22 as they witnessed the succession of a new captain across all formats within a mere five months. As Virat Kohli decided to call quits in the shortest format and led the team for the final time in the ICC event. Virat Kohli also left the captaincy in Test cricket after the series defeat against South Africa.
However, the talismanic batter wanted to claim his position as a captain for the ODI format, but Chetan Sharma- who headed the selection committee sacked him and handed over the job to Rohit Sharma. Kohli was informed about getting sacked 90 minutes before the selection meeting.
“His Agression, His Passion, His Batting. He Was An Amazing Captain..” Justin Langer
Langer was the coach of the Australian national cricket team, he gave his viewpoint on the matter after 18 months of Sacking Kohli from the captaincy in all the formats of cricket, he stated while talking to BCCI:
“Loved his (Virat Kohli) aggression. BCCI did injustice on him, and I do not want to hear anything else. If he wanted to keep ODI captaincy, he should have been allowed to do that out of respect. There was nothing I didn’t like about Virat Kohli. His aggression, his passion, his batting. He was an amazing captain,” he said.
Rohit Sharma has assumed the captaincy in all formats of cricket.
Following Virat Kohli’s resignation, Rohit Sharma assumed the role of the new captain for India. Rohit Sharma has led in a total of 182 T20 matches, achieving victories in 111 matches while experiencing defeat in 67 matches. These statistics demonstrate a notable improvement compared to Virat Kohli’s records, as the Bangalore captain has secured wins in 94 out of his 190 T20 matches as a captain.
Also, when Rohit Sharma succeeded Virat Kohli from captaincy, he won his first test series as a captain against New Zealand , by an unassailable lead of 2-0. He is also leading India in the ICC WTC finals 2023.
Nonetheless, Virat Kohli’s brilliant captaincy cannot be compared as he led India to the finals of four ICC tournaments – Champions Trophy 2017, World Cup 2019, World Test Championship 2021, and T20 World Cup 2021, which is a remarkable feat.
