Tamim Iqbal, a former Bangladesh opener, believes Bangladesh was punished unfairly owing to an incorrect umpiring decision in their T20 World Cup 2024 match against South Africa. On Monday, the two teams played an entertaining game in New York, with Bangladesh losing by only four runs.

Tamim Iqbal is a Bangladeshi cricket legend who achieved great success as a left-handed opening batter. Tamim Iqbal has had a long and successful sporting career. He has played over 70 Test matches and over 240 ODIs. Although T20 cricket is not his primary emphasis, he has played more than 75 games, demonstrating his ability to adapt to multiple formats.

The conclusion of the match may have been drastically different if an umpire’s decision had gone the other way. Mahmudullah was given out LBW in the 17th over of Bangladesh’s chase when a ball bounced off his pad and went for a boundary. Mahmudullah reviewed the ruling, which was overturned since the ball was obviously going down the leg side. However, according to the regulations, once the umpire declared him out, the ball was considered dead, therefore Bangladesh did not score those four runs.

What Tamim Iqbal Said

Tamil Iqbal spoke wh ESPNcricinfo on the rule and said,

“These four runs could have changed Bangladesh’s fortunes. It could have happened. I am talking like a fan but if you think about it, those four runs could have been really important.”

Tamim hopes that the ICC would investigate the situation and amend the regulation as it is a simple modification that is required. Mahmudullah failed to clear Aiden Markram on his penultimate delivery which resulted in a long on.

Tamim Iqbal Guides on Changing the Rule

Tamim Iqbal said that if the ball is on its way to the fence then the on-field umpire can wait before making a decision. He feels that the runs should be awarded rather than discarded as a dot ball if a decision is reversed in favour of the hitters.

He added,

“You have time. You can wait for two seconds and see where the ball is going. Either it is going to the boundary or it isn’t and then you can make your decision. Regardless of anything, I feel if the batter is not out, and if the ball has hit his pad and gone to the boundary, it should be given runs.”

Currently Bangladesh hold the second position in the points table in their group with matches left with Nepal and Netherlands.
