Eoin Morgan wants Shubman Gill to be in the squad
Former England skipper and World Cup champion Eoin Morgan wants explosive batter Shubman Gill to be in the squad as he is included in the travel reserves and Yashasvi Jaiswal has picked over him. Since both have played IPL and compared to Shubman with Yashasvi it is debatable whom to choose for the opening position. Shubman has kept consistent form and scored runs for India but since Yashasvi made his debut he proved that he belongs to that position and scored a lot of runs. Eoin Morgan says:
“The only decision I would have had differently and if I were selecting the squad, would have Shubman Gill over Yashasvi Jaiswal. I have played alongside him, I know how he thinks. I know how he works,”
“I feel he’s a future leader within that side and I think in big moments, in World Cups, the more leaders the better. Even if he’s sitting on the sideline, you still need inspiration from here and there, a sense of positivity,”
Jaiswal burst onto the scene for India last year as he scored 502 runs in 13 innings at an average of 33.46 and a strike rate of 161.93, which included a hundred and 4 fifties. Meanwhile, Gill has also risen through the ranks in the shortest format, having scored 335 runs in T20Is with 1 fifty and 1 hundred.
Eoin Morgan says India are favorites
Eoin Morgan feels that India are favorite to win the World Cup though there are some injury concerns still their squad looks very strong and backup players are too very strong and can be replaced if possible. Virat Kohli was the highest run-getter in IPL so he is in form Bumrah will lead the bowling department and the middle order is also capable of tackling the situation. So, overall it looks very strong team and has the potential to win this World Cup. Eoin Morgan says:
“The strongest side even with injuries throughout the tournament is India. Their strength and depth is incredible,” Morgan said.
“And it’s almost probably, we’re talking about who the players that were missed out in their squad of 15 because of the quality that they possess,” he stated.
“They are favorites for me, the quality they have on paper, if they produce it I think they can beat anybody quite well in the tournament,” he added.
India will kick start their campaign on June 5 against Ireland in New York. High-voltage clash will be witnessed on June 9 when India will face Pakistan.
