David Warner’s international retirement was sealed on Tuesday when Australia were officially knocked out of the T20 World Cup 2024 in the Super 8 stage. Australia picked the experienced David Warner and partnered him with Travis Head at the top for the T20 World Cup. Warner did not disappoint as the veteran batter hit 178 runs from 7 matches, including two fifties for Australia.

Warner will continue to play franchise-based T20 cricket leagues across the globe, including the IPL.

Post his retirement, David Warner has looked upon young dynamic Jake Fraser McGurk to take his mantle forward as an opener in the game of cricket.

Fraser-McGurk, meanwhile, announced his arrival during IPL 2024, thrilling the cricketing fraternity and fans with aggressive strokeplay. He played for the Delhi Capitals in IPL 2024 and scored 330 runs in nine matches at 36.67 and kept a strike rate of 234.04. Notably, Fraser-McGurk travelled with the Australian squad as a reserve player. The Delhi Capitals opener was not picked in Australia’s 15-man squad despite his sensational debut season in the Indian Premier League 2024 season. The 22-year-old scored 330 runs in 9 matches at a strike rate of over 230 for the Capitals.

David Warner on Jake Fraser McGurk

During an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald in May, Warner said traveling with the squad as a reserve for the 2024 T20 World Cup should be a great experience for Fraser-McGurk. He said:

“95 per cent of our team are pretty much married with kids, coming in as a young guy can be challenging. You are potentially locked in your room, doing nothing. Fortunately, we’ll be in the Caribbean, so you can go outside and have a nice swim and things like that. But the experience for him will be great and being around the guys and the group where potentially I feel like he’ll probably go on that England tour in late August.”

The Australians will be in action during the England tour in September when they play both ODIs and T20Is.
