South Africa’s destructive batter Quinton de Kock astounded everyone by announcing his retirement from ODIs post the marquee ODI WC 2023. Quinton de Kock has expressed his desire to represent Proteas in the T20I format and wants to play franchise leagues around the globe.

It is a dangerous sign for International cricket as players are prioritizing and in fact abandoning national duty for the rich cash leagues. Cricket South Africa (CSA) should have intervened and stop Quinton de Kock from the retirement as he still has 5-7 international cricket left in him as already in 2021 he bid adieu to the red ball format. Perhaps, we are seeing the end of International cricket with the rise of leagues.

Quinton de Kock is saying tata bye-bye to ODI cricket- Aakash Chopra

Aakash Chopra was seen speaking on his You Tube channel and was quite surprised that the wicket-keeper batter Quinton de Kock has decided to bid adieu to ODI cricket at the age of 30. Aakash Chopra pointed out that England’s flamboyant all-rounder Ben Stokes too has come for WC 2023 and was quite worried with the future of ODI cricket.

“Quinton de Kock has said that this ODI World Cup is his last and that he won’t play in this format after that. Ben Stokes has returned and Quinton de Kock is saying tata bye-bye, although Ben Stokes has also probably come only for the World Cup,” said Aakash Chopra.

“Quinton de Kock has said that he will complete his BBL (Big Bash League) obligation and is not going to play ODI cricket. It means when India goes to South Africa, you won’t see Quinton de Kock playing,” he added.

A lot of might bid goodbye to ODI cricket- Aakash Chopra

Aakash Chopra was quite concerned with the future of ODI cricket and said that the players might play only ODI World Cup to World Cup. Aakash Chopra pointed out that it’s not the first time that the players are bidding adieu to ODI cricket and won’t be the last one.
“A lot of people might bid goodbye to ODI cricket because already a proposal has been tabled to bid goodbye to ODI cricket, that you will only play World Cup to World Cup, which means if the next World Cup is in 2027, the teams should start playing bilateral ODIs in 2026, and you don’t play ODI cricket other than that,” said Aakash Chopra.
“If that actually happens that everyone is playing T20 cricket and no one plays ODI cricket, then whether you officially say bye-bye or it becomes an unofficial bye-bye in any case, and if you don’t see yourself playing the 2027 World Cup, it’s as good as over. The fact is that players bidding goodbye to ODI cricket is not new and it’s not the last one either,” he added.
