  • Australia’s national team selector, George Bailey, discussed Cameron Green‘s possibilities for the eagerly anticipated ICC T20 World Cup, which will start in June in the United States and the West Indies. He said that Green might be able to get a spot in the team due to the impending Indian Premier League (IPL).

Notably, in order to prepare for Tests, Australia’s leading all-rounder was left off the roster for their two-match T20I series against the West Indies and New Zealand. In late March, Cameron Green is scheduled to join the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) team for the IPL 2024.

Australia’s Green has played eight T20Is matches with not much success. He amassed 452 runs at an average of 50.22 and a strike rate of 160.28 in 16 games for the Mumbai Indians during the most recent IPL, in addition to taking six wickets. He was traded in for entire cash by Royal Challengers Bangalore prior to the 2024 season.

“We are finalizing that 15 for the World Cup, will be firmly in the mix”- George Bailey on Cameron Green’s selection for the marquee event

Mitchell Marsh and Marcus Stoinis would compete with Cameron Green for the position of all-rounder. In addition, players like Matt Short are considered because their spin bowling can be useful in the Caribbean and the USA during the next T20 World Cup.

“Yeah, very firmly, we know he’s going to go to the IPL and getting a big batch of T20 cricket in. It’s a constant conversation with multi-format players, working out the priority at any given time, and making sure they get what they need but he’s certainly one whose name I think, as we are finalizing that 15 for the World Cup, will be firmly in the mix,” Bailey explained.

“We’re really confident that just continuing to expose him he’ll get better and better”- Bailey on Cameron Green

Cameron Green has recently had troubles in all formats for Australia. That didn’t help either with ODIs and Tests in 2023 being constantly changing and having unclear roles. Bailey stated, “The management is optimistic that Green can present the opposition with a formidable challenge in any format.”

Before the World Cup in 2022, the 24-year-old won a spot at the top of Australia’s T20I team by hitting two quick half-centuries against India. He had a dismal 2023 campaign in all formats, which ultimately cost him his spot at the end of the Ashes.

In the Test match against the West Indies at home, Steve Smith was shifted up to the order, giving him the No.4 position. Bailey noted that despite Green’s failure to get a score of fifty or above, the team management was pleased to support his “unbelievable” skill set.

“There’s a skill set there that’s unbelievable across all three formats, we’re really confident that just continuing to expose him he’ll get better and better and learn more about his game. But like any player, I don’t think it’s going to be a straight line – there’ll be fluctuations throughout, as there always is. His last two years have been a whirlwind, I imagine, at different times. He’s travelled with the team basically non-stop,” Bailey reflected.
